Afghan Taliban step up attacks on election officials, voters

REUTERS/Omar SobhaniBy Jessica Donati KABUL (Reuters) - Taliban militants are stepping up efforts to destabilise Afghanistan ahead of next month's presidential vote, kidnapping election workers and executing villagers at random to scare people off voting, officials and campaigners said. The attacks follow the Taliban's warning on Monday that it would use its "full force" against anyone who takes part in the electoral process. President Hamid Karzai is constitutionally barred from running for a third term. On Thursday, police and elders rushed to negotiate the release of four election workers kidnapped by the Taliban in eastern Nangarhar province a day earlier, Afghan officials said.




Delhi HC cites 'Life of Pi' during gang rape verdict

New Delhi, March 13 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Thursday said the movie "Life of Pi", which the Dec 16 gang rape victim watched before the incident, where a tiger and a boy find comfort in each other, must have been etched in the victim's mind. Dismissing the appeals of the four convicts - Mukesh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma - a division bench of Justice Reva Khetrapal and Justice Pratibha Rani observed that the victim was returning with her male companion after watching "Life of Pi".


Egypt's army blames Muslim Brotherhood for attack on army bus

Egypt's army blamed the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood for an attack on an army bus which killed one officer and wounded three others in the capital on Thursday, violence underscoring growing security threats to the military-backed government. The Muslim Brotherhood strongly condemned the attack in an emailed statement, saying the targeting of army soldiers and civilians is a "heinous crime that requires a thorough and transparent investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice." They accused the military-backed government of trying to implicate the Brotherhood in the attack for political reasons. An army spokesman said in a statement posted on Facebook: "Masked armed men belonging to the terrorist Brotherhood targeted a bus of the armed forces ... which led to the martyrdom of the Warrant Officer Yusri Mahmoud Mohamed Hassan." Islamist militants are expanding their insurgency in Egypt where army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who overthrew Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in July, is expected to announce he will run for president within days.


Delhi earned 'rape capital' title after Dec 16, says HC

New Delhi, March 13 (IANS) Delhi earned the title of "rape capital" after the horrific Dec 16, 2012 gang rape, the Delhi High Court said Thursday while confirming the death penalty of the four convicts. Dismissing the appeal of the four convicts - Mukesh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma - challenging the Sep 13, 2013 trial court verdict sentencing them to death, a division bench of Justice Reva Khetrapal and Justice Pratibha Rani said the "crime was horrendous". Delhi earned the title of 'Rape Capital'," the court said.


Palestinian leader lashes out at rival, political tensions flare

Arab media have reported in recent months that Dahlan has met Egypt's powerful army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and has also reached out to Hamas, the Islamist rulers of Gaza who have always viewed him with deep distrust.

Four held in Kolkata with over 40 kilo gold

Kolkata, March 13 (IANS) Four alleged smugglers have been arrested here and over 40 kg gold worth over Rs.12 crore seized from them, an official said Thursday. Officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) nabbed all the four accused Wednesday night and seized 353 gold bars, weighing nearly 41 kg, from them. Earlier in the month, DRI officials had arrested two people and seized 45 kg of gold worth in excess of Rs. 12 crore. Besides the DRI, the customs department and the Border Security Force (BSF) have been making regular seizure of gold suspected to be smuggled in from Bangladesh.

Devyani Khobragade, who was India's deputy consul-general in New York, had diplomatic immunity when she sought on January 9 to dismiss the indictment, and thus could not be prosecuted, U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin in Manhattan ruled on Wednesday. U.S. prosecutors could still seek a fresh indictment, while in India reports emerged that Khobragade's two children held both U.S. and Indian passports, in apparent violation of Indian rules.




CBI searches NSEL offices for irregularities

New Delhi, March 13 (IANS) The CBI Thursday carried out searches at 15 locations across the country, including NSEL offices, in a case of alleged irregularities in investments by state-run trading company PEC, causing a loss of Rs.120 crore. "The searches were carried out after the agency registered a case of alleged criminal conspiracy to cheat a public sector unit (PEC) in the matter of floating fraudulent paired contracts for trading of agro commodity on the platform of NSEL, without actually undertaking any genuine trade", added the official. The searched locations included residential premises of five PEC officials and two of National Spot Exchange Ltd. (NSEL) officials. "Seven offices of NSEL and six of its counterpart in PEC transactions are being searched as part of the operation," the official said.

Late on Wednesday, a man in Istanbul was shot dead and a police officer in eastern Turkey suffered a fatal heart attack. Erdogan said demonstrators had "burned and destroyed" offices of his ruling AK Party in Istanbul. These are charlatans, they have nothing to do with democracy, they do not believe in the ballot box," Erdogan said at an opening ceremony for an underground train line in the capital Ankara.

Car plows into crowd near major Texas festival, two dead

Johnson REUTERS - Two people were killed and 23 injured when a car plowed into a crowd of people early on Thursday morning near the South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW) music and film festival in Austin, Texas, and a suspect was arrested, police said. Five of the 23 injured were in critical condition after the crash near a bar popular with festival goers, the Austin Police Department said in a statement. "A vehicle crashed through some of our temporary South by Southwest barricades and continued driving and hit multiple pedestrians," said Austin Police Department spokesman Brian Moon. SXSW, which began as a music event in 1987, is a collection of interactive, film, and music festivals and conferences that draws tens of thousands of people to the Texas capital annually.
