Pope urges apparent mafia killers of 3-year old to repent
6:43:00 PM
Pope Francis urged the killers of a three-year-old boy murdered in southern Italy as part of an apparent mafia hit to repent on Sunday after a crime that he said was unprecedented. The charred body of Nicola Campolongo, known as "Coco", was found along with that of his grandfather Giuseppe and a young Moroccan woman in a burnt-out car in the town of Cassano Jonio near Cosenza in Calabria last week. According to Italian media reports, investigators believe the boy's 52-year-old grandfather Giuseppe Iannicelli was the real target of mafia killers who shot all three people in the car in the head before apparently torching the vehicle. Italian media reported that Iannicelli was linked to drug trafficking, a speciality of 'Ndrangheta, the Calabrian mafia that has seized control of much of the trade and which is seen as one of the world's most dangerous criminal organisations.

Britain unveils ban on e-cigarettes for under-18s
6:42:39 PM
Britain said on Sunday it would ban the sale of electronic cigarettes to children aged under 18, citing possible adverse health effects and outlining a need for further medical research. E-cigarettes, which are puffed like a regular cigarette but deliver nicotine by vaporising liquid rather than burning tobacco, have grown in popularity and some analysts predict the market could outpace conventional cigarettes within a decade. Under-18s are already banned from buying conventional cigarettes in Britain. Sunday's announcement included plans to make it illegal for adults to buy regular cigarettes for consumption by under 18s.

China jails prominent rights activist for four years

Handout photo of Chinese rights advocate Xu Zhiyong speaking during a meeting in BeijingBy Sui-Lee Wee BEIJING (Reuters) - A court sentenced one of China's most prominent rights advocates to four years in prison on Sunday after he campaigned for the rights of children from rural areas to be educated in cities and for officials to disclose their assets. Xu Zhiyong's jailing will send a stark warning to activists that the Chinese Communist Party will crush any challenge to its rule, especially from those who seek to organise campaigns. It also diminishes hopes for meaningful political change, even as China pledges to embark on economic reforms. Separately, one of China's most prominent dissidents, Hu Jia, who frequently accuses authorities of infringing civil liberties, said police had summoned him on a charge of "suspicion of causing a disturbance".
