China jails prominent rights activist for four years

Xu Zhiyong's jailing will send a stark warning to activists that the Chinese Communist Party will crush any challenge to its rule, especially from those who seek to organise campaigns. It also diminishes hopes for meaningful political change, even as China pledges to embark on economic reforms. Separately, one of China's most prominent dissidents, Hu Jia, who frequently accuses authorities of infringing civil liberties, said police had summoned him on a charge of "suspicion of causing a disturbance".




Egyptian soldiers killed in Sinai as protest toll rises to 49

Al-Qaeda inspired Islamist militant groups based in Sinai have stepped up attacks on security forces since the army toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Brotherhood in July following mass protests against his rule. On Saturday, the third anniversary of the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak, clashes between supporters and opponents of the new political order killed 49 people, the health ministry said, showing deep divisions that have flared often since the revolt that raised hopes of a stable democracy.




Nepal makes headway in path to choose new PM

Koirala, who is also the party head, defeated three time former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba in a vote by party legislators. "Our priority is to form a government of national consensus, including all major political parties in the parliament. This is necessary to draft the constitution within one year," said Dilendra Prasad Badu, a senior Nepali Congress leader.




Four Egyptian soldiers killed in attack on bus in Sinai -security sources

ISMAILIA (Reuters) - Four soldiers were killed and nine wounded when gunmen attacked a military bus on Sunday that was travelling in the Sinai Peninsula, security sources said. Sinai-based militants have stepped up violence against the state since Islamist President Mohamed Mursi's ouster in July, and the attacks have become more brazen in recent months, spreading to Cairo and other cities. Gang rape victim, family placed under police protection

The case has made waves in India, underscoring how sexual violence has become a huge social and political issue after the rape and murder of a physiotherapist on a moving bus in Delhi in December 2012, an attack that sparked nationwide demonstrations. The tribal woman, recovering in hospital, has told police she was assaulted on Monday night in the Birbhum district of West Bengal as punishment for having a relationship with a man from a different community. The girl's family is also under protection of the police now." Many villagers have denied the girl was raped, according to local media reports.




Himachal prisoners take part in R-Day parade

Shimla, Jan 26 (IANS) Thirteen prisoners set themselves 'free' this Republic Day by marching and playing to the tunes of 'Sare Jahan se Accha Hindustan Hamara' here Sunday. The prisoners, from two open jails of Himachal Pradesh, marched for the first time as a 13-member band contingent. "It's a proud moment for all of us to get ourselves associated with the patriotic day," murder convict Ram Kishan, who led the group, told IANS. Donning white dress with a striped band on waist, the band was the main attraction at the parade where Governor Urmila Singh took the salute.


Suicide bomber kills four in Kabul attack on Afghan army bus

Security personnel keep watch at the site of a   suicide attack in KabulA suicide bomber attacked an Afghan army bus in Kabul on Sunday, killing four people and wounding up to 22, police said, the latest incident in a worrying surge of violence in the Afghan capital over the past 10 days. The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, the worst since a devastating assault on a popular restaurant on January 17 killed 21 foreigners and Afghans. Hashmat Stanikzai, the chief spokesman for police in Kabul, said an investigation into the latest attack was under way. The Afghan capital was hit by at least two other attacks in the previous 24 hours, according to security officials.
