Thieves steal Pope John Paul's blood from Italy church

By Philip Pullella ROME (Reuters) - Thieves broke into a small church in the mountains east of Rome over the weekend and stole a reliquary with the blood of the late Pope John Paul II, a custodian said on Monday. Franca Corrieri said she had discovered a broken window early on Sunday morning and had called the police. John Paul, who died in 2005, loved the mountains in the Abruzzo region east of Rome. Polish-born John Paul, who reigned for 27 years, is due to be made a saint of the Roman Catholic Church in May, meaning the relic will become more noteworthy and valuable.


Women's group demands thorough probe into Sunanda's death

New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) A women's group Monday demanded a thorough investigation into the mysterious death of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of union minister Shashi Tharoor. The All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) expressed concern at the "arbitrary and non-serious way" in which the probe into the death of Pushkar is being carried out. "The case has been transferred back to the south district (police) from the Crime Branch without providing justified reasons," the AIDWA said in a statement. In the statement, the AIDWA said the transfer only "raised suspicions" about chances of "external interventions" in the case which involves Tharoor.


World Bank warns Myanmar on corruption as it unveils $2 billion in aid

By Jared Ferrie YANGON (Reuters) - The World Bank on Monday warned Myanmar against corruption as it unveiled a $2-billion aid package designed to provide better health care and improve supplies of electricity. Despite the country's ongoing reforms, the World Bank has ranked Myanmar 182 out of the 189 countries in its annual Doing Business report. World Bank president Jim Yong Kim told reporters in the Myanmar capital, Naypyitaw, that he recalled shutting down a program in Bangladesh on his first day on the job in 2012, because of corruption concerns. "I would not hesitate to do that again if we were to find evidence of corruption in any of the projects," he said, adding that he was confident the Bank would be able to monitor programs in Myanmar to prevent abuse.


Girl's harassment triggers clash in Lucknow

Lucknow, Jan 27 (IANS) A case was filed Monday against unidentified people from two communities involved in stone-pelting after a girl was allegedly harassed, police said. The two groups clashed Sunday night in Bazarkhala in the old city area of the capital after the girl was allegedly harassed, Bazarkhala Circle Officer Sarvesh Kumar Mishra told IANS. The mob was dispersed and a heavy police force was deployed in the area over fear of escalation of violence.


Thai police rescue hundreds of Rohingya in raid on suspected traffickers' camp

Marshall BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai police have rescued hundreds of Rohingya Muslims from a remote camp in a raid prompted by a Reuters investigation into human trafficking, police officials said on Monday. Police detained 531 men, women and children in Sunday's raid at a camp near the town of Sadao in the southern province of Songkhla, on a well-established route for human smugglers near Thailand's border with Malaysia. It was the first raid on illegal Rohingya smuggling camps since January 9, 2013. The police said they were following up on a December 5 Reuters report that Rohingya were held hostage in camps hidden near the border with Malaysia until relatives pay ransoms to release them.


French tourist killed in Mizoram accident

Aizawl, Jan 27 (IANS) A 51-year-old French tourist died after being run over by a speeding car in Mizoram, police said here Monday. "French tourist Didier Gauthier was hit by a speeding car Sunday night when it tried to avoid a collision with a taxi. Gauthier was crossing a road when he was knocked down by the car and died on the spot," a police official told reporters.


Man surrenders in Hyderabad gold heist case, another absconding

Hyderabad, Jan 27 (IANS) A man has surrendered in the sensational Rs.5.97 crore gold heist from a leading jewellery shop here, while another accused is still at large, police said. The accused, Kiran Kumar, reached a television channel's office late Sunday and informed the staff that he stole the gold ornaments from Tanishq showroom in Punjagutta on the night of Jan 24-25. Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma Monday produced Kiran Kumar before the media. He said police were on the lookout for another accused Anand, who is the cousin of Kiran Kumar.

"As election officials, it is our job to make sure elections are successful, but we also need to make sure the country is peaceful enough to hold the election," Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, an Election Commission member, told Reuters. "We don't want it to be bloody." The commission will meet embattled Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Tuesday to discuss the vote date. With protests aimed at toppling Yingluck now in their third month, there has been repeated speculation that the armed forces might try a repeat of the 18 actual and attempted coups they have mounted in 80 years of on-off democracy in Southeast Asia's second biggest economy.




China official seeks tougher rules on religion after Xinjiang blasts

By Michael Martina BEIJING (Reuters) - A senior Chinese official called for stricter management of religious activities, state media said on Monday, following explosions in China's western region of Xinjiang which authorities say were masterminded by a religious militant. Blasts struck a beauty salon and a vegetable market. Yu Zhengsheng, a member of the Communist Party's seven-man Politburo Standing Committee, called for action to ensure that religious practice did not spill over into illegal acts. His remarks, quoted by the official People's Daily, made no direct reference to Xinjiang.


Libyan militiaman released in Egypt after diplomats freed - sources

A Libyan militia commander was released in Egypt after Egyptian diplomats kidnapped in Tripoli were freed, Egyptian security sources said on Monday. Libyan and Egyptian government officials said there had been no deal to free Shaban Hadia, also known as Abou Abeida, in exchange for the diplomats. Libya's Deputy Foreign Minister Abdul Razak Al-Grady announced on Sunday that the five Egyptian diplomats kidnapped last week in response to Hadia's detention had been freed. Their abduction in the Libyan capital illustrated the fragility of government control over former rebels and militias who two years ago helped topple Muammar Gaddafi.


CORRECTED - Chinese man sentenced to death for hospital rampage

(Corrects spelling of Zhejiang province) BEIJING (Reuters) - A court in eastern China on Monday sentenced to death a man who went on a rampage in a hospital and killed a doctor, because he was unhappy with the results of an operation on his nose, state media said. The case of Lian Enqing in wealthy Zhejiang province underscored difficulties in tackling violence in a sector plagued by corruption, with hospitals overwhelmed by patients and doctors badly paid. Unable to find him, he produced a knife and stabbed to death the head of the department, according to the official Xinhua news agency. Lian's sister, Lian Qiao, told the court that he had suffered respiratory problems and discomfort after the surgery in March 2013, Xinhua said.


Tamil Nadu governor talks tough after boat disaster

Chennai, Jan 27 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah Monday demanded "stern measures" to prevent a repeat of a boat disaster near the Andaman island that killed 21 people and has left one person missing. In a brief condolence message, Rosaiah explicitly blamed the tourist operator and the boatmen for the tragedy whose victims were mainly from Tamil Nadu. "The careless and negligent acts of some tourist operator and the boatmen led to the capsize of the boat snatching away valuable lives of many," he said. Speaking to IANS over phone, a district official said: "All the victims in the (G.B.Pant Hospital at Port Blair) are fine." Three of them, including a woman and a girl, were in the intensive care unit.
