Germany has faced heavy criticism over its handling of the discovery of 1,407 Nazi-plundered works in the flat of Cornelius Gurlitt, an elderly recluse whose father took orders from Hitler to buy and sell so-called 'degenerate art' to fund Nazi activities. Since a magazine broke the story last November, debate over the rightful ownership of works stashed in the Munich apartment - including by masters such as Duerer, Delacroix, Picasso and Matisse - has grown into a wider controversy over thousands of paintings on open display in museums. "They know what's been stolen," WJC President Ronald Lauder told Reuters in an interview during a visit to Berlin.

Speaking on U.S. television a day after her conviction by a court in Florence, the 26-year-old American said that she would never willingly return to Italy to serve the 28-1/2 year sentence handed down by judges. Knox and her Italian former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were both found guilty of killing the 21-year-old Kercher, who was found stabbed to death in an apartment the two young women shared in Perugia. Knox has remained in her U.S. hometown of Seattle since being released from prison in 2011 after an appeal overturned an original conviction and freed her and Sollecito after four years in custody.

| Birbhum gang rape: SC asks Bengal chief secretary to send report | | | New Delhi, Jan 31 (IANS) The Supreme Court Friday directed West Bengal's chief secretary to submit a detailed report on the gang rape of a 19-year-old tribal girl in the state's Birbhum district. A bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice M.Y. Eqbal said that they were not satisfied with the report sent by the Birbhum district judge as it had no information on action taken by the authorities. The court said that on its Jan 24 order, Birbhum's district judge, along with the chief judicial magistrate and a team of people inspected the place in question and submitted a report to the apex court. It accordingly directed the apex court's registrar to forward a copy of the district judge's report to the state chief secretary, who, in turn, was asked to submit a detailed report and the follow up action by police within a period of two weeks. |

| Turkey purges hundreds more police over graft probe, media reports | |  Turkey has purged at least 700 more police officers, local media said, over a corruption investigation portrayed by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan as part of a plot to undermine the country's economy and his government. Turkey's Central Bank raised all key interest rates by some 500 basis points at an emergency meeting on Tuesday. A photograph in the Hurriyet daily showed staff at Istanbul's main courthouse carrying boxes of documents which the paper said were from the offices of two prosecutors who were removed from the graft inquiry this week. Altogether, more than 5,000 police officers have been dismissed or transferred since the graft inquiry became public on December 17 with the arrest of businessmen close to Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and three cabinet ministers' sons.
