Jayalalithaa orders fast relief to Andaman victims

Chennai, Jan 26 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Sunday expressed deep sorrow at the death of at least 28 people in a boat capsize near Andaman islands, and ordered officials to take necessary action for providing relief to the survivors. In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa said senior state government officials have been ordered to reach Port Blair, the Andamans capital, immediately to take action to provide medical relief to those who have been rescued.


Woman raped inside moving car in Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 26 (IANS) A 28-year-old married woman was raped by her friend in a moving car here, police Sunday said. The woman was found weeping sitting along the road near the Anand Vihar Bus Terminal in east Delhi Sunday evening, police said. She was taken to a police station where she said that she was raped by her friend in a car, in front of his two friends.


Boat capsizes off Andamans, PM expresses shock

Police identify gunman in Maryland mall shooting, motive unclear

By Alice Popovici COLUMBIA, Maryland (Reuters) - Police identified the gunman on Sunday in a deadly Maryland mall shooting as a 19-year-old from the nearby city of College Park, but had no word on his motive nor whether he had any ties to the two people he shot and killed in a skate shop. The gunman, identified as Darion Marcus Aguilar, opened fire with a shotgun in the shop at the mall in Columbia, Maryland, about 20 miles (32 km) west of Baltimore, on Saturday before apparently killing himself, police said. Aguilar, who lived with his mother, arrived at the mall by taxi about an hour before the shooting began, Howard County Police Chief Bill McMahon told a Sunday morning news conference. He used a 12-gauge shotgun, and fired six to eight shots, killing Brianna Benlolo, 21, also of College Park, and Tyler Johnson, 25, of Mount Airy, Maryland, police said.


Costa Rican held with hashish in Goa

Sensitise drug peddlers with ill-effects on users: Court

New Delhi, Jan 26 (IANS) Noting that drug addiction has spread like an epidemic, a court here has asked government and other authorities to ponder over the manner for sensitising drug traffickers with the ill-effect and pain of an addict. Noting that there is no provision under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the court has asked jail officials to take convicts of such cases to hospitals and drugs de-addiction centres so that they may see the pain and agony of victims. "In the interest of the society, it is for government and all the concerned, including prison authorities to ponder over the manner in which such-like drug traffickers can be sensitized of the pain and agony of a drug addict," said Special Judge, NDPS cases, Narinder Kumar Friday. The court's observation came while convicting a 65-year-old drug peddler Mohammad Qayyum and sentencing him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment.


Three vagabonds arrested for train robberies

New Delhi, Jan 26 (IANS) Three vagabonds have been arrested for involvement in several train robberies in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, police said Sunday. Uma Shankar (22), Shaukin (24) and Sarafat alias Bhura (21) were arrested Friday near the Old Delhi railway station. "All of them are vagabonds and stay near railway stations. They are not much educated and are drug addicts," a police officer said.


Notice to police over wrong treatment by Gurgaon hospital

Gurgaon, Jan 26 (IANS) A judicial magistrate's court here has issued notice to police for failing to submit the status report of a probe into the alleged cheating and wrong treatment of a minor girl by Fortis Memorial Research Institute, a lawyer said Sunday. Owner of the Fortis Memorial Research Institute Malvinder Mohan Singh and doctors Sanjeev K. Choudhary, Neeraj Parkash, Ritu Chadha, Nandini Vasdev, Vineet Pant and Abhinav Singhal were booked for breach of trust, cheating, criminal conspiracy, wrongly treating the patient and some other sections of the Indian Penal Code Jan 11.


Egyptian soldiers killed in Sinai as protest toll rises to 49

By Maggie Fick CAIRO (Reuters) - Gunmen killed three Egyptian soldiers in an attack on a bus in the Sinai Peninsula on Sunday, the military said, prompting a warning from the army that it would eliminate the Muslim Brotherhood, which it blames for much of Egypt's political violence. Al Qaeda-inspired Islamist militant groups based in Sinai have stepped up attacks on security forces since the army toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Brotherhood in July following mass protests against his rule. On Saturday, the third anniversary of the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak, 49 people were killed in anti-government protests which were attacked by supporters of the new political order and security forces, witnesses said.


24 prisoners freed, 1,000 get remission in Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 26 (IANS) A total of 24 prisoners were freed from Tihar Central Jail here and 1,000 others, except those convicted for rape, smuggling, and drugs offences, got remission in their sentences ranging from 15 days to two months on the occasion of the Republic Day, an official said. "Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung gave remission in the jail term of 1,000 prisoners in an official letter sent to us Saturday," Tihar Jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta told IANS. The remission facility is given every year on the occasion of Republic Day in view of the good conduct of prisoners, he said, adding it is done under the provision of Section 432 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Prisoners sentenced to one year have been given 15 days' remission, while prisoners with sentences from one to five years will see one month's remission and those with jail terms from more than five to 10 years have been given remission of 45 days.


Suicide bomber kills four in Kabul attack on Afghan army bus

Security personnel keep watch at the site of a   suicide attack in KabulBy Mirwais Harooni KABUL (Reuters) - A suicide bomber attacked an Afghan army bus in Kabul on Sunday, killing four people and wounding up to 22, police said, the latest incident in a worrying surge of violence in the Afghan capital over the past 10 days. The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, the worst since a devastating assault on a popular restaurant on January 17 killed 21 foreigners and Afghans. Among the victims of Sunday's attack was local radio journalist Shahid Naimi, according to police, who happened to be near the bus when the bomber blew himself up. Naimi was the second Afghan journalist to die in the past week, after the mutilated body of Noor Ahmad Noori was discovered in southern Helmand province on Thursday.
