(Corrects spelling of Zhejiang province) BEIJING (Reuters) - A court in eastern China on Monday sentenced to death a man who went on a rampage in a hospital and killed a doctor, because he was unhappy with the results of an operation on his nose, state media said. The case of Lian Enqing in wealthy Zhejiang province underscored difficulties in tackling violence in a sector plagued by corruption, with hospitals overwhelmed by patients and doctors badly paid. Unable to find him, he produced a knife and stabbed to death the head of the department, according to the official Xinhua news agency. Lian's sister, Lian Qiao, told the court that he had suffered respiratory problems and discomfort after the surgery in March 2013, Xinhua said.


Tamil Nadu governor talks tough after boat disaster

Chennai, Jan 27 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah Monday demanded "stern measures" to prevent a repeat of a boat disaster near the Andaman island that killed 21 people and has left one person missing. In a brief condolence message, Rosaiah explicitly blamed the tourist operator and the boatmen for the tragedy whose victims were mainly from Tamil Nadu. "The careless and negligent acts of some tourist operator and the boatmen led to the capsize of the boat snatching away valuable lives of many," he said. Speaking to IANS over phone, a district official said: "All the victims in the (G.B.Pant Hospital at Port Blair) are fine." Three of them, including a woman and a girl, were in the intensive care unit.


Man surrenders in Hyderabad gold heist case

Hyderabad, Jan 27 (IANS) A man has surrendered before the police in the sensational Rs.5.97 crore gold heist from a leading jewellery shop in Hyderabad in the early hours of Saturday. Kiran Kumar reached a television channel's office late Sunday and informed the staff that he stole the gold ornaments from Tanishq showroom in Punjagutta. According to Tanishq management, 15.57 kg gold ornaments and precious stones worth Rs.5.97 crore were stolen. Kumar took the police team to his room in Rasoolpura neighbourhood, where the stolen gold was reportedly found.


China official seeks tougher rules on religion after Xinjiang blasts

Police shot dead six people and six more died when explosives they were carrying detonated in Xinhe county, according to weekend media reports. Blasts struck a beauty salon and a vegetable market. Yu Zhengsheng, a member of the Communist Party's seven-man Politburo Standing Committee, called for action to ensure that religious practice did not spill over into illegal acts.

Andaman boat tragedy: President condoles loss of lives
