| Egyptian soldiers killed in Sinai as protest toll rises to 49 | | | By Maggie Fick CAIRO (Reuters) - Gunmen killed three Egyptian soldiers in an attack on a bus in the Sinai Peninsula on Sunday, the military said, prompting a warning from the army that it would eliminate the Muslim Brotherhood, which it blames for much of Egypt's political violence. Al Qaeda-inspired Islamist militant groups based in Sinai have stepped up attacks on security forces since the army toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Brotherhood in July following mass protests against his rule. On Saturday, the third anniversary of the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak, 49 people were killed in anti-government protests which were attacked by supporters of the new political order and security forces, witnesses said. |
| 24 prisoners freed, 1,000 get remission in Delhi | | | New Delhi, Jan 26 (IANS) A total of 24 prisoners were freed from Tihar Central Jail here and 1,000 others, except those convicted for rape, smuggling, and drugs offences, got remission in their sentences ranging from 15 days to two months on the occasion of the Republic Day, an official said. "Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung gave remission in the jail term of 1,000 prisoners in an official letter sent to us Saturday," Tihar Jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta told IANS. The remission facility is given every year on the occasion of Republic Day in view of the good conduct of prisoners, he said, adding it is done under the provision of Section 432 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Prisoners sentenced to one year have been given 15 days' remission, while prisoners with sentences from one to five years will see one month's remission and those with jail terms from more than five to 10 years have been given remission of 45 days. |
| Suicide bomber kills four in Kabul attack on Afghan army bus | |  By Mirwais Harooni KABUL (Reuters) - A suicide bomber attacked an Afghan army bus in Kabul on Sunday, killing four people and wounding up to 22, police said, the latest incident in a worrying surge of violence in the Afghan capital over the past 10 days. The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, the worst since a devastating assault on a popular restaurant on January 17 killed 21 foreigners and Afghans. Among the victims of Sunday's attack was local radio journalist Shahid Naimi, according to police, who happened to be near the bus when the bomber blew himself up. Naimi was the second Afghan journalist to die in the past week, after the mutilated body of Noor Ahmad Noori was discovered in southern Helmand province on Thursday.

Xu Zhiyong's jailing will send a stark warning to activists that the Chinese Communist Party will crush any challenge to its rule, especially from those who seek to organise campaigns. It also diminishes hopes for meaningful political change, even as China pledges to embark on economic reforms. Separately, one of China's most prominent dissidents, Hu Jia, who frequently accuses authorities of infringing civil liberties, said police had summoned him on a charge of "suspicion of causing a disturbance".

| Nepal makes headway in path to choose new PM | |  Social democrat Sushil Koirala was named as candidate for the Himalayan nation's prime minister by the Nepali Congress party on Sunday, clearing a major hurdle for the formation of a new government two months after an election. Koirala, who is also the party head, defeated three time former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba in a vote by party legislators. "Our priority is to form a government of national consensus, including all major political parties in the parliament. | Gang rape victim, family placed under police protection | |  By Sujoy Dhar KOLKATA (Reuters) - A 20-year-old woman who says she was gang-raped in an tribal region on orders of a village court has been placed under police protection, along with her family, and will be relocated after being ostracised by villagers, officials said on Sunday. The case has made waves in India, underscoring how sexual violence has become a huge social and political issue after the rape and murder of a physiotherapist on a moving bus in Delhi in December 2012, an attack that sparked nationwide demonstrations. The tribal woman, recovering in hospital, has told police she was assaulted on Monday night in the Birbhum district of West Bengal as punishment for having a relationship with a man from a different community. The girl's family is also under protection of the police now." Many villagers have denied the girl was raped, according to local media reports.
