| Haryana ex-minister Kanda's bail to be heard Feb 25 | | | New Delhi, Feb 20 (IANS) A court here Thursday set Feb 25 for a clarification on the bail plea of former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, accused of abetting the suicide of a former air hostess. The Delhi Police had Tuesday opposed the bail plea, saying the former minister could influence witnesses if he is released on bail. Kanda's counsel Kapil Sankhla told the court that the former minister has been in judicial custody for the last 18 months and the charge of sexual exploitation against his client was dropped by the Delhi High Court. The counsel said Kanda's earlier bail pleas were rejected because of the serious charge of sexual exploitation, and that Kanda was entitled for bail now. |
| Rajiv assassination: SC suspends release of convicts | | | New Delhi, Feb 20 (IANS) The Supreme Court Thursday blocked the Tamil Nadu government's order to release of seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Although its order to the Tamil Nadu government covered only three convicts whose death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment Feb 18, it would apply to the other four as well as the court said it was examining the larger issue of procedural lapse. Solicitor General Mohan Prasaran said the central government's application named only three convicts but other four too would be impacted by the order. Ordering status quo, a bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice N.V. Ramana said it would examine the procedural lapses in the Tamil Nadu government's decision to release within three days the three convicts along with four others in the case. |
| Danish woman rape case: One accused to undergo potency test | | | New Delhi, Feb 20 (IANS) A court here Thursday ordered one of the accused involved in robbing and gang-raping a 51-year-old Danish tourist to undergo potency test. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sudhanshu Kaushik asked police to take the 55-year-old Shyam Lal alias Bhajni for a potency test and file a status report. The court order came on a plea by Shyam Lal claiming that he is impotent. "Accused to undergo potency test in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a woman," the court said. |
| Clash in Kashmir town over man's killing | | | Srinagar, Feb 20 (IANS) Residents of Pulwama town in Jammu and Kashmir Thursday clashed with security forces following the killing of a man alleged to be a Hizbul Mujahideen guerrilla. The man, identified as Tawseef Hassan Dar, a resident of Prichoo village in Pulwama, was killed by security forces in Budgam district Wednesday. | Alert woman cop saves blind girl from abductionNational | | | New Delhi, Feb 20 (IANS) An alert Delhi Police woman official foiled the abduction of a blind girl here, police said Thursday. Assistant Sub-Inspector Kiran Sethi Wednesday afternoon saw a man forcing the blind girl to sit inside an auto rickshaw in Rajinder Nagar of central Delhi and intervened. "I was not in the uniform when I spotted the girl.... She was looking scared and told me that the man was forcing her to sit in an auto," Sethi told IANS. Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar said the man, identified as Sandeep, 29, has been booked under charges of abduction and molestation. |
| Ghaziabad rape victim gave wrong account, say police | | | Ghaziabad, Feb 20 (IANS) The information provided by a gang rape victim was found to be factually incorrect and intended to implicate the enemies of the real rapist, Ghaziabad police said Thursday. Superintendent of Police Shiv Hari Meena said police probed the account thoroughly as the victim was found to be frequently changing her statements to the investigation team and zeroed in on the real culprits. It was found that the girl was raped but not by those people who were named in the First Information Report (FIR), police said. The victim had told police that she was kidnapped by a junior engineer working with the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd and taken to an abandoned house in Loni town where three people, including the engineer, a builder and a contractor gang-raped her after drugging her. |

| Upset kin of Rajiv blast victims to implead in case | | | Chennai, Feb 20 (IANS) Upset at the Tamil Nadu government's decision to release the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the kin of some of those who lost their lives in the bomb blast Wednesday said they would implead themselves in the central government's petition. The former prime minister was killed by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber May 21, 1991 at an election rally in Sriperumbudur near here. Along with him some 15 others - among them Congress activists and police officials - lost their lives. Speaking to reporters, S. Abbas, son of a former Congress woman leader, John, brother of police official Edward Joseph, and League Mohan, son of Congress functionary League Munusamy, said they would implead themselves in the case. |

| Congress clashes with Tamil Nadu over Rajiv's killers | |  By Shyamantha Asokan NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The government was embroiled in a dispute on Thursday with Tamil Nadu that plans to free seven people convicted for the 1991 killing of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, in political jostling ahead of a general election. The assassination by a suicide bomber is an emotional issue for the ruling Congress party, led by the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, which is gearing up for an election expected to start in April. Gandhi's widow, Sonia, is Congress' president and their son, Rahul, is leading the party's election campaign. Tamil Nadu plans to release the convicts in what is seen as a pitch for votes by Jayaram Jayalalithaa, chief minister of Tamil Nadu where there is some sympathy for the killers' political motives.
