| Upset kin of Rajiv blast victims to implead in case | | | Chennai, Feb 20 (IANS) Upset at the Tamil Nadu government's decision to release the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the kin of some of those who lost their lives in the bomb blast Wednesday said they would implead themselves in the central government's petition. The former prime minister was killed by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber May 21, 1991 at an election rally in Sriperumbudur near here. Along with him some 15 others - among them Congress activists and police officials - lost their lives. Speaking to reporters, S. Abbas, son of a former Congress woman leader, John, brother of police official Edward Joseph, and League Mohan, son of Congress functionary League Munusamy, said they would implead themselves in the case. |

| Congress clashes with Tamil Nadu over Rajiv's killers | |  By Shyamantha Asokan NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The government was embroiled in a dispute on Thursday with Tamil Nadu that plans to free seven people convicted for the 1991 killing of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, in political jostling ahead of a general election. The assassination by a suicide bomber is an emotional issue for the ruling Congress party, led by the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, which is gearing up for an election expected to start in April. Gandhi's widow, Sonia, is Congress' president and their son, Rahul, is leading the party's election campaign. Tamil Nadu plans to release the convicts in what is seen as a pitch for votes by Jayaram Jayalalithaa, chief minister of Tamil Nadu where there is some sympathy for the killers' political motives.

The EOU team raided the house of Ishwar Dayal, block development officer (BDO) of Mohiuddin Nagar in Samastipur district Wednesday and seized disproportionate assets worth Rs.91 lakh. A First Information Report was lodged against Dayal under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. "Ishwar Dayal has acquired most of his property after being promoted to the post of BDO in 2009. |
| A police officer campaigns against a social evil in Assam | | | New Delhi, Feb 20 (IANS) Determined to end a social evil that still haunts rural and backward areas of Assam, a police officer's initiative and perseverance has resulted in raising awareness about the scourge of witchcraft that is often used bizarrely to settle personal scores and land disputes in villages. With some 100 cases registered in the past five years due to the initiative called Project Prahari (guard), the "deterrence factor" may have resulted in increased vigilance but actual arrest of the culprits have been few due to the absence of witnesses, the prime mover behind the project said. Kuladhar Saikia, now the additional director general of Assam Police, who had initiated the project in 2001 when he was the deputy inspector general (Western Range) by running campaigns involving village chiefs and elders, said the involvement of entire communities and the lack of evidence due to the fear of being ostracised had made the task of apprehending the culprits quite challenging. |
| Wife of China's jailed Nobel Laureate Liu hospitalised | |  By Sui-Lee Wee BEIJING (Reuters) - The wife of China's jailed Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Liu Xiaobo has been admitted to hospital after police refused to let her seek medical help abroad, a family friend said on Thursday. Liu Xia, who has been under effective house arrest since her husband won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010, suffers from heart problems, possibly severe depression, and other ailments made worse during her time under guard, her friends say. She was admitted to a hospital in Beijing this month under police guard but the hospital told her to leave after a day without giving a reason, said Mo Shaoping, a prominent human rights lawyer and a close family friend. Liu Xia was admitted to another hospital on Tuesday but it is unclear how long she will remain there.
