Thai protesters ignore poll, head for downtown Bangkok

REUTERS/Athit PerawongmethaBy Amy Sawitta Lefevre and Chaiwat Subprasom BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai anti-government protesters who have been camped out in north Bangkok packed their tents and were marching downtown on Monday as they consolidated efforts to topple Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, a day after a disrupted general election. Some joined protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban on foot and others followed in cars and six-wheel trucks as Thailand's long-running political conflict showed no sign of ending. Others surrounded a government office in north Bangkok, where Yingluck was holding a meeting. The protesters closed camps at two of the seven big intersections that Suthep's supporters have blockaded since mid-January, at Victory Monument and Lat Phrao, and were heading for the fringes of the central oasis of Lumpini Park.




One more held for Delhi heist

New Delhi, Feb 3 (IANS) The Delhi Police have made one more arrest in the sensational Rs.7.69-crore heist here, a police officer said Monday. "Ajay, in his early 20s, was arrested from south Delhi area early this (Monday) morning," the officer told IANS. A group of people robbed Rs.7.69 crore cash from businessman Rajesh Kalra near Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi and hijacked the car in which he was going with four other employees Jan 28.


Man held for acid attack in Agra

Agra, Feb 3 (IANS) A 28-year-old man was arrested here for an acid attack on a girl that she escaped but critically injured her father, police said Monday. An first information report was registered against Yogesh Pandit Sunday who allegedly threw acid on a girl who managed to escape but badly burnt her father, who had to be hospitalised.

Jharkhand boy dies after alleged beating by teacher

Ranchi, Feb 3 (IANS) An eight-year-old boy died after allegedly being beaten by a school teacher in Jharkhand, police said Monday. According to police, parents of the boy Sujit Munda -- resident of Mandar town, near Ranchi -- alleged that their son was brutally beaten up by school teacher Arsad Ansari. The boy was admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science here after the alleged assault where he died Sunday. The incident took place at a government school at Mandar, 40 km from Ranchi.


Sri Lanka rejects "reckless" US criticism of its rights record

Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Biswal expressed frustration on Saturday over Sri Lanka's failure to punish military personnel responsible for atrocities in a civil war that the government won in 2009 against separatist Tamil rebels. Biswal, speaking in Colombo after a two-day visit, said the United States would table a third U.N. human rights resolution against Sri Lanka in March to address the war crimes allegations as its human rights climate has been worsening. Reckless and irresponsible statements without evidence have been recoursed to in order to create an impact to give way to prejudged action," Sri Lanka's External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.
