| Ascertain accused's rehabilitation before sentencing: SC |

| New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS) The Supreme Court has directed trial courts to determine before pronouncing sentence whether a person convicted of murder or other heinous crimes could be reformed or rehabilitated. "Many a times, while determining the sentence, the courts take it for granted, looking into the facts of a particular case, that the accused would be a menace to the society and there is no possibility of reformation and rehabilitation," the bench said. Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice Vikramajit Sen in their judgment delivered Thursday said that while it was the duty of the court to ascertain the factors, the state was obliged to furnish material "for and against the possibility of reformation and rehabilitation of the accused". The court said this while commuting the death sentence of a man named Anil alias Anthony Arikswamy Joseph to 30 years imprisonment over what he had already undergone. |

 By Saud Mehsud UNDISCLOSED LOCATION IN WAZIRISTAN, Pakistan, Feb 22 (Reuters) - T he Pakistani Taliban told the government there was no chance of peace in the country unless Pakistan changed its political and legal system and officially embraced Islamic law. The government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif wants to find a negotiated settlement to years of fighting with the militants but talks broke down this month after a string of attacks. In a rare face-to-face meeting with journalists on Friday in an undisclosed location in Waziristan, a lawless region on the Afghan border, main Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said there was still hope negotiations might resume. "Despite recent bombings in North Waziristan and killing of our 74 men by the security forces during the peace talks, we are still serious about the talks," he said, wearing an AK-47 bandolier across his chest.

| Lucknow, Feb 22 (IANS) Cross-FIRs were lodged Saturday against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kumar Vishwas, a Congress leader, and their supporters after an altercation between members of both parties in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi district, an officer said. The FIRs have been lodged with regards to a scuffle that broke out between the two leaders and their supporters late Friday after Congress leader Munna Singh intercepted Vishwas's 'jhadu lagao, beimaan bhagao' campaign at Durgapur square in Bhadar block. | Kolkata, Feb 22 (IANS) A medical intern died in the state-run SSKM hospital here Saturday after suspected drug overdose, an official said. Two interns were found in critical state in the hospital hostel Saturday morning and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, said SSKM Hospital director Pradip Mitra. But we have learnt from their friends that there is a suspicion it could be a case of drug overdose," Mitra added. |
