Second indictment of Devyani Khobragade unnecessary: India

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) India Saturday said the second indictment of diplomat Devyani Khobragade in a visa fraud case in the US was an "unnecessary step". "The second indictment of Devyani Khobragade is an unnecessary step. We reiterate that the case has no merit," external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said in a tweet. "India's government will no longer engage on this case in the US legal system," he said.


Dec 16 gang-rape: Two convicts move Supreme Court

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) Two convicts in the Dec 16, 2012 gang-rape moved the Supreme Court Saturday challenging the Delhi High Court verdict upholding their death sentences. The accused, Mukesh and Pawan Gupta, have contended that they were "denied fair trial under the garb of day-to-day trial and (under) torture they were compelled to accept the prosecution story which is not only concocted but also contrary to the facts". The Delhi High Court Thursday upheld the death sentences awarded to four convicts in the gang rape, saying that their "barbaric" act is "not worthy of human condonation" and society cannot be a a spectator to "such depraved behaviour". Jammu court sentences rape convict to life

Jammu, March 15 (IANS) A fast track court in Jammu sentenced a rape convict for life Saturday. The convict, Nikhil Kumar Sharma, was tried by the court for raping a 10-year-old mentally challenged girl in Akhnoor area of Jammu district.


Four charred to death in Jharkhand

Ranchi, March 15 (IANS) At least four people were charred to death in a car in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh district Saturday, police said. We have called a forensic team and dog squad to carry out investigation," a police officer told IANS.


Tripura opens toll-free helpline for women in distress

Agartala, March 15 (IANS) The Tripura Police, as part of its initiatives to curb rising atrocities and crimes against women, has launched a toll-free helpline for women in distress to lodge their complaints, an official said here Saturday. He said: "Immediate action on receipt of calls would be taken by the control room by intimating concerned police stations or police officials. Counseling would also be provided to women through the helpline number, in case of need." Two women police officers, one familiar with the Bengali language and the other speaking 'Kokborak', a tribal language, will attend to the complaints. "The Tripura government has recently recruited 300 more women police constables and 50 women police officials and set up more all-women police stations to curb crimes against women," the police official said adding that with the new recruits, the percentage of women police personnel increased to 10 percent in the state.


Notice to AIIMS-Patna director for violating quota policy

Patna, March 15 (IANS) The central government has issued a show cause notice to the director of AIIMS-Patna for violating the reservation policy in recruiting faculty for six new premier medical institutes in the country last year, an official said Saturday. G.K. Singh, director, All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna, has been charged with violating the reservation policy in faculty recruitment, flaunting financial rules in recruitment through outsourcing and irregular engagement of personnel at the institute in his capacity as the head of a six-member selection panel.


Three detained for threatening to blow up Bodh Gaya temples

Patna, March 15 (IANS) At least three people, including a girl, have been detained here for threatening to blow up the Bodh Gaya and Vishnupad temples in Gaya district, police said Saturday. Police detained Sunny, Rakesh and a 19-year-old girl from Ranipur-Rasulpur locality in Patna late Friday, Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj said. "Three of them were detained for interrogation after police traced the mobile number used to sent the threatening SMS to the Gaya district officials to blow up both the temples," he said. "Sunny and Rakesh denied that they had sent the threatening SMS to the official in Gaya," a police officer said.


Curfew in Kashmir's Bandipora district

Srinagar, March 15 (IANS) Curfew has been imposed in Kashmir's Bandipora district, where tensions escalated Saturday amid the death of a youth in police firing a day before. Farhat Ahmad Dar was killed in Naidkhai area of Bandipora in north Kashmir when a violent mob attacked a security force camp in the area. When a police vehicle was chasing away the mob, irate protestors tried to torch the vehicle. Police said the youth was immediately shifted for treatment to Pattan town in Baramulla district, but he succumbed to injuries en route.


Man ties wife, beats her to death

The unsuspecting wife was trapped as the room bolted from inside and tied her hands and feet with an electric wire. Inspector Arun Kumar said preliminary inquiries and evidence suggested Seema, 35, who was living separately with her three children was killed by her husband Ram Agarwal.
