| Former Pakistani president Musharraf pleads not guilty to treason | |  By Syed Raza Hassan ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's former president, Pervez Musharraf, on Monday pleaded not guilty to five counts of treason, in the latest chapter of a long-running drama between the country's increasingly assertive judiciary and its former military ruler. Musharraf faces the death penalty if convicted of the charges over his suspension of the constitution and imposition of emergency rule in 2007, when he was trying to extend his rule as president. Musharraf stood ramrod straight and replied "Not guilty" to each charge. "I would like to ask where is the justice for me in the Islamic republic of Pakistan ... I have only given to this country and not taken anything," Musharraf said.

| Azam Khan blames Babri demolition for terrorism | | | Lucknow, March 31 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Urban Development and Minority Affairs Minister Azam Khan has cited the demolition of the disputed Babri mosque structure in Ayodhya as the reason for terrorism in India. The senior Samajawadi Party (SP) leader commented about the Dec 6, 1992, demolition of the mosque at an election rally in Faizabad city Sunday. "It is this act of the communal forces that the country continues to suffer from after two decades," said Khan, a close associate of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. |
| Yemen president urges Iran to stop interference - newspaper | | | Yemen's president called on Iran to stop supporting separatists in the south and religious groups in the north of the Arabian peninsula country, which is trying to stabilise after more than two years of political upheaval. The comments by Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi published in pan-Arab daily Al Hayat newspaper will likely further strain relations with Iran, which has repeatedly denied interfering in Yemen. "Unfortunately, Iranian interference still exists, whether through its support for the Hirak separatists or some religious groups in northern Yemen," Hadi told Al Hayat, apparently referring to the Shi'ite Muslim Houthi rebels who are trying to capture more territory in the northern part of the country. "We asked our Iranian brothers to revise their wrong policies towards Yemen, but our demands have not borne fruit. |
| Israeli court convicts ex-PM Olmert in bribery case | |  By Rami Amichay TEL AVIV (Reuters) - An Israeli court convicted former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of bribery on Monday over his ties to a real-estate deal while in his previous post of Jerusalem mayor, likely ending any prospect of a political comeback. Olmert, a centrist internationally credited with pursuing peace with the Palestinians, had denied wrongdoing in the Holyland apartment complex deal, and other corruption allegations that forced his resignation as premier in 2008. In 2012, Olmert was acquitted of major charges in separate cases involving his links to a U.S. businessman while he was Jerusalem mayor and an Israeli cabinet minister. Judge David Rozen, handing down the conviction in Tel Aviv District Court, said the case "exposed governance that grew more corrupt and rotten over the years", with bribes paid to public officials.

Erdogan, fighting the biggest challenge of his 12-year rule, addressed supporters from a balcony at AKP headquarters at the end of a long and bitter election campaign in which he has labeled his opponents "terrorists" and an "alliance of evil". The election campaign has been dominated by a power struggle between Erdogan and a moderate U.S.-based cleric, Fethullah Gulen, whom he accuses of using a network of followers in police and judiciary to fabricate graft accusations in an effort to topple him.

| Thai court throws out murder charges in Saudi 'Blue Diamond' case | | | By Amy Sawitta Lefevre BANGKOK (Reuters) - A Thai criminal court on Monday dismissed a case against five men, including a senior police officer, charged with murdering a Saudi businessman over precious stones worth millions of dollars stolen a quarter of a century ago. The theft of the jewels worth $20 million in 1989 and subsequent disappearance of Mohammad al-Ruwaili, a businessman with ties to the Saudi royal family, strained Thai-Saudi relations severely. Bangkok's Ratchadaphisek Criminal Court ruled there was insufficient evidence to try the five men who were accused of kidnapping and killing Ruwaili, who had gone to Bangkok to investigate what became known as the "Blue Diamond Affair". The gems and jewellery were stolen from a Saudi prince's palace by a Thai gardener, Kriangkrai Techamong, who shipped the loot back home to Thailand. |

Benzino, star of the VH1 show "Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta," was driving in the procession on Route 3 on Saturday when he was shot by his nephew, Gai Scott, who had pulled alongside in another vehicle, the Plymouth County, Massachusetts District Attorney said. He was listed in good condition on Sunday at South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth, Massachusetts, a spokeswoman said. There had been "growing family tension" between Scott and Benzino, whose given name is Raymond Scott, the district attorney said in a statement. |
| "Naive" duo arrested at Vatican with 2.8 trillion euro in fake bonds | | | Italian police earlier this month arrested two "naive" men who tried to enter the Vatican carrying fake bonds with an apparent value of some 2.8 trillion euros, Vatican officials said on Sunday. The American and Dutchman appeared on March 11 at St. Anne's Gate at the Vatican saying they wanted to go the to the Vatican bank, which is not open to the general public. The guards became suspicious and looked in their briefcase, where they found the bonds, some of which had a face value of 500 million euros. The Vatican police called Italian police, who searched the men's hotel and found rubber stamps, embossers and other instruments for making counterfeit bonds. |
| Afghan woman bids for power to halt slide in rights | |  By Katharine Houreld and Jessica Donati KABUL/KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - The deeply conservative, all-male crowd at Afghanistan's Kandahar stadium stared in disbelief as the small woman in a modest black headscarf stood up and reached for the microphone. Habiba Sarabi's speech in the southern Taliban heartland city lasted only a few minutes, thanking the crowd for supporting her candidacy in next month's presidential election. During their strict Islamist rule from 1996-2001, the Afghan Taliban had banned women from education, voting and most work, and they were not allowed to leave their homes without permission and a male escort. A fair election would mark Afghanistan's first democratic transfer of power, a monumental achievement for Afghans struggling to end decades of bloodletting and cement fragile gains in education, health and human rights.

On the Internet he found "A Home Where Dreams Come True", a website touted as China's biggest online adoption forum, part of an industry that has been largely unregulated for years. Expectant couples, unwilling or unable to keep their children, go to the website looking for adoptive parents rather than abort their babies or abandon them. There are no clear statistics on how many people use these websites but "A Home Where Dreams Come True" said 37,841 babies had been adopted through its website from 2007 to August 2012.

| Shootout in Nigerian capital during attempted jail break kills 21 | | | Detainees suspected of being members of Islamist militant group Boko Haram overpowered their guards at a prison near Nigeria's presidential villa in Abuja, seizing a rifle and triggering a gun battle that killed 21 people, security officials said. The prisoners struck on Sunday as the guards from Nigeria's State Security Service (SSS) came in to feed them at their headquarters' prison near the residence of President Goodluck Jonathan, SSS spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar said. Jail breaks by Islamists in Nigeria are common. Boko Haram militants, who are fighting to create an Islamic state in Nigeria and are seen as the main threat to Africa's top oil producer, attacked the main military barracks in the northeast, freeing dozens of prisoners on March 14. |
