Shakti Mills rapes: Verdict to come March 20

Mumbai, March 15 (IANS) Barely seven months after a Mumbai woman journalist was gang-raped in the deserted Shakti Mills complex, a court here Saturday completed its hearing in the case and wil pronounce the verdict March 20. The ruling by Principal Sessions Judge Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi will come in the sensational Aug 22 incident involving a woman photojournalist as well as the July 31 rape of a call centre employee in the same premises and by the same gang. Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and defence lawyers concluded arguments before Judge Phansalkar-Joshi, who set March 20 as the date of verdict for both the cases. She had identified the accused - Ashfaq Sheikh, Kasim Hafiz Sheikh alias Kasim Bengali, Salim Ansari, Vijay Jadhav and a minor - in the incident which was often referred to as Mumbai version of the Delhi Dec 16 gang rape case.

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) The Supreme Court Saturday stayed the execution of the death sentence of Mukesh and Pawan Gupta, two of the four convicts in the Dec 16, 2012 gang rape, whose death sentences was upheld by the Delhi High Court March 13. A special bench of Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh stayed the execution of the death sentence till March 31.

Gunmen kill six army officers near Cairo

Saturday's attack on a military police checkpoint was carried out by unidentified gunmen who then fled, according to state media. The army released a statement shortly after, blaming the Brotherhood, but the outlawed movement's leader Amr Darrag denied the accusation. How can the Muslim Brotherhood be accused a few minutes after the attack with no evidence or investigation," he said on Twitter.


Man held for attempt to rape minor in Gurgaon

Court cuts jail term of Pakistan doctor who helped find bin Laden

By Jibran Ahmed PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A court in Pakistan on Saturday reduced by 10 years the jail term handed down to a Pakistani doctor who helped the United States track down al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, in a blow to his supporters who have been fighting for his release. Shakil Afridi, hailed as a hero by U.S. officials, was arrested after U.S. soldiers killed bin Laden in May 2011 in a raid in a northern Pakistani town that outraged Pakistan and plunged relations between the strategic partners to a new low. Pakistan arrested Afridi and sentenced him to 33 years in jail for being a member of a militant group, a charge he denies. On Saturday, a court in the city of Peshawar reduced his sentence to 23 years following repeated calls by the United States and his legal team for his release.


Second indictment of Devyani Khobragade unnecessary: India

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) India Saturday said the second indictment of diplomat Devyani Khobragade in a visa fraud case in the US was an "unnecessary step". "The second indictment of Devyani Khobragade is an unnecessary step. We reiterate that the case has no merit," external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said in a tweet. "India's government will no longer engage on this case in the US legal system," he said.


Dec 16 gang-rape: Two convicts move Supreme Court

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) Two convicts in the Dec 16, 2012 gang-rape moved the Supreme Court Saturday challenging the Delhi High Court verdict upholding their death sentences. The accused, Mukesh and Pawan Gupta, have contended that they were "denied fair trial under the garb of day-to-day trial and (under) torture they were compelled to accept the prosecution story which is not only concocted but also contrary to the facts". The Delhi High Court Thursday upheld the death sentences awarded to four convicts in the gang rape, saying that their "barbaric" act is "not worthy of human condonation" and society cannot be a a spectator to "such depraved behaviour". A division bench of Justice Reva Khetrapal and Justice Pratibha Rani also dismissed the appeals of the four convicts - Mukesh, 26;

Four charred to death in Jharkhand
