REUTERS/Mohammad IsmailBy Hamid Shalizi and Maria Golovnina KABUL (Reuters) - With a week to go before Afghanistan's presidential election, escalating violence across the country risks undermining the credibility of a vote meant to mark the first democratic transfer of power in Afghan history. The Taliban have declared war on the April 5 election, calling it a Western-backed sham and threatening to do everything in their power to derail the vote through a campaign of gun attacks, bombings and assassinations. A brazen raid by a squad of suicide bombers and gunmen on an election office in Kabul this week sent a chilling message to voters as they prepared to choose a successor to President Hamid Karzai. "Such attacks may not derail the election, but they will certainly create fear and anxiety among the people," said Nader Nadery, chairman of FEFA, Afghanistan's largest election monitoring group.

Lucknow, March 29 (IANS) Imran Masood, Congress candidate from Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur constituency, was arrested early Saturday for his hate speech against BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, police said. Senior Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar led the team that arrested Masood, who is the nephew of jailed Congress leader Rashid Masood. Imran Masood's troubles began when his speech, threatening "to chop Modi into pieces" and that 42 percent of the population in Uttar Pradesh was Muslim as compared to the four percent in Gujarat, was caught on tape.

A second family also told Reuters it is preparing to try to break the deal and then sue GM. Neither family has yet done so, however, and trying to win such actions will be difficult. To undo a settlement, plaintiffs would have to convince a judge that they were intentionally misled or defrauded by the other party, according to legal experts and plaintiffs' lawyers.
