| NHRC denies ordering action against Somnath Bharti | | | New Delhi, March 31 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission Monday denied it asked Delhi Police to take action against former AAP minister Somnath Bharti for his controversial campaign against an alleged drug and prostitution racket. "The NHRC has seen news stories that it has given a direction for taking action against Somnath Bharti in the Khirki Extension incident," said an NHRC statement. On Jan 15, Bharti - then law minister in the Aam Aadmi Party's 49-day government - along with his supporters ordered police to raid houses rented by Ugandan women in south Delhi's Khirki Extension area, claiming they were being used for drug trafficking and prostitution. The NHRC statement said another complaint was received on the incident "which was forwarded to the concerned authority for taking such action as deemed appropriate". |
| Airhostess case: Notice to police on plea to cancel Kanda's bail | | | New Delhi, March 31 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Monday issued notice to police on a plea of former air hostess Geetika Sharma's brother seeking cancellation of bail to former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, who was in jail for the past 18 months after being accused of abetting her suicide. Justice V.P. Vaish sought Delhi Police's reply by April 17. Approaching the high court, Sharma's brother contended that Kanda is an influential person and while on bail, will try to tamper with evidence and influence the witnesses. Asking the court to cancel the bail given to Kanda, he said that the trial court has not taken into consideration all the aspects while granting him bail. |

The sentences, handed out on Sunday, come days ahead of Bahrain's Formula One Grand Prix - an annual event which has been cancelled once, then staged amid heavy security since the demonstrations began. Adriana Urquiola, who worked as a sign language interpreter at a TV station, was returning from a shopping trip. The government accuses the opposition of wanting more fatalities to make their case of state-sponsored violence against peaceful rallies and justify international sanctions against members of President Nicolas Maduro's administration. The opposition says the government wants a higher toll as it blames the chaos on opposition gunmen and hooded demonstrators blocking roads, and to distract from the issues that started the protests, such as high inflation, food shortages and crime.

The charges were brought against her by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) which, should it forward the case to the Senate for possible impeachment, would mean Yingluck being suspended from official duties. Yingluck asked for more time to call on 10 witnesses and to submit further documents to support her defence, NACC member Prasart Pongsivapai told reporters following the meeting. The commission will act with justice toward the prime minister and in a straight-forward manner." Yingluck has come under pressure over the past five months from protesters who have occupied state offices and parts of Bangkok in a bid to remove her and rid the country of the influence of her brother, ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The death sentence of the four convicts was upheld by the Delhi High Court March 13. The apex court bench of Justice B.S. Chauhan and Justice J. Chelameswar at the outset of the hearing said they have gone through the judgment of the high court upholding their conviction and award of death sentence but would like to go though the judgment of the trial court. |

Musharraf faces the death penalty if convicted of charges over his suspension of the constitution and imposition of emergency rule in 2007, when he was trying to extend his tenure. The case marks the first time a former military officer of Musharraf's rank has appeared in court before a judge in a country where the military has rarely been challenged by either the government or the judiciary. "I would like to ask where is the justice for me in the Islamic republic of Pakistan ... I have only given to this country and not taken anything," Musharraf said.
