BSF seizes 36 kg heroin in Punjab

Chandigarh, April 6 (IANS) In its third major seizure of heroin this month, the Border Security Force (BSF) said Sunday it had seized 36 kg of heroin in Punjab after a shootout with smugglers from Pakistan. "BSF personnel challenged the smugglers who fired back... Taking advantage of the darkness and the wheat crop, the smugglers escaped," said a BSF spokesman. Earlier this month, the BSF seized 13 kg and 27 kg heroin in Punjab's Amritsar and Abohar sectors respectively.

Three killed in Jharkhand wall collapse

Ranchi, April 6 (IANS) Three people died in sleep when a wall of a building collapsed on them in Jharkhand's Godda district, police said Sunday. According to the police, the three people were carrying coal on their bicycles when they Saturday night reached Lengradih village of Godda district, about 400 km from the state capital Ranchi. They parked their bicycles laden with coal sacks, leaning against the wall of a government building and went to sleep. Unable to support the weight of the coal-laden bicycles, the wall collapsed on the three people, who died on the spot.


Dalai Lama to meet Japan quake survivors

Dharamsala, April 6 (IANS) Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama Sunday began his 12-day visit to Japan, where he will offer prayers and provide solace to the survivors of the devastating earthquake March 11, 2011, an official said here. "His Holiness will attend a special prayer service Monday for those affected by the disaster in Sendai city," said Lhakpa Tshoko, spokesperson for the Dalai Lama's office. An earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale and a subsequent tsunami three years ago, had left thousands dead and missing in Japan. "One of the main purposes of the visit, is to provide emotional support and strength to those, who had been affected by the devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster," said a post on Dalai Lama's official website quoting the spokesperson.
