Decades after genocide, Congo struggles to dislodge Rwanda rebels

REUTERS/Noor KhamisBy Peter Jones TONGO, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - Twenty years after the genocide in Rwanda, a rebel group founded by ethnic extremists who took part in that slaughter still prowls the lush hills of neighbouring eastern Congo, defying a renewed threat by the army and U.N. peacekeepers to dislodge it. The Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) sits at the heart of two decades of war and instability in Democratic Republic of Congo, in which millions of people have died from violence, hunger and disease. Founded by members of the Interahamwe Hutu militia that organised the slaughter of 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda in 1994, the FDLR's ranks have dwindled over the last decade to less than 2,000 rag-tag fighters. But its presence in eastern Congo remains an irritant to Rwanda's Tutsi leadership, which has held power since the genocide, and has prompted years of meddling by Kigali in its larger neighbour, fuelling instability and bloodshed.

REUTERS/Adnan AbidiBy Sharat Pradhan MUZAFFARNAGAR (Reuters) - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), tipped to form the next government, appears to be returning to its Hindu nationalist roots at the start of a five-week general election, raking up divisive issues and using strong language in riot-hit Muzaffarnagar. Criss-crossing the country for months before the first phase of voting began on Monday, the BJP and its candidate for prime minister, Narendra Modi, had mainly campaigned on a ticket of better governance, economic development and job creation. But just hours after voting started, the election commission demanded an explanation from Modi's chief aide Amit Shah, accusing him of incendiary speeches in towns where dozens of people, mostly Muslims, were killed in Hindu-Muslim riots last year. When justice is not done to all the parties and the action is one-sided action, then the public is forced to come out in the streets," Shah said in Muzaffarnagar last week, according to a transcript provided by the commission.

U.S. Senate votes to bar proposed Iran U.N. ambassador from country
2:14:02 AM
The U.S. Senate passed legislation on Monday seeking to bar Iran's proposed U.N. ambassador, Hamid Abutalebi, from entering the United States. The legislation, introduced by Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, would prevent "known terrorists" from entering the United States to serve as U.N. ambassadors. The Democratic-controlled Senate passed the measure by a voice vote. Several lawmakers had said they were infuriated that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani would make such a choice, and the State Department had expressed concern.
