Accused Colorado movie theater gunman seeks change of venue

Defense attorneys argued in their motion for a change of venue that James Holmes cannot get a fair trial in Arapahoe County because of "pervasive media coverage" of the case locally and "the undeniable impact of the tragedy on the community itself." The trial is scheduled to open in October.




Major dies in accident during operation in Kashmir

Srinagar, April 7 (IANS) A major of the Indian army died in a accident Monday while on a operation against separatist guerrillas in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district, a defence spokesman said. According to the defence spokesman, a unit of the counter-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles had launched a cordon and search operation in Panchalthan (Chaugam) village of Anantnag, during which Maj.Rahul Singh sustained a fatal head injury due to 10-15 metre fall caused by extreme slippery terrain due to the inclement weather. "The accident happened at 11 a.m. when Maj. Rahul Singh, braving the extremely inclement weather, led his troops as part of the operation.


Woman, three associates held for robbing businessman

Zoya, 19, her boy friend Sunil Kumar Gupta, 23, and their associates Sunil Kumar, 28 and Rinku Sharma, 25, were Sunday nabbed from different areas of south Delhi for robbing a businessman Deskyong Namgyal April 1. Namgyal of Green Park in south Delhi told police that on the intervening night of March 30 and 31, he met Zoya at a discotheque of a reputed five-star hotel in south Delhi where they exchanged their mobile numbers. "April 1, Zoya called Namgyal, asking him to meet her at a place in south Delhi.


Rs.4.4-crore worth red sandalwood seized in Bihar

Egypt court upholds jailing of leading pro-democracy activists

By Yasmine Saleh CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian appeals court on Monday upheld the jailing of three leading figures of the 2011 pro-democracy uprising, tightening a crackdown on secular activists opposed to the army-backed government. Critics see their case as an attempt to stifle the kind of political street activism common since the uprising that ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak three years ago as Egypt prepares for presidential elections next month. A court handed down three-year sentences to the three liberal activists, Ahmed Maher, Ahmed Douma and Mohamed Adel, last December for protesting without permission and assaulting the police. The European Union and the United States had urged Egypt to reconsider the verdict.

The disabled South African track star, on trial for murder, apologised to the mother of model Reeva Steenkamp, saying he had fired four times through a toilet door at his luxury Pretoria home in the belief he was defending her from an intruder. Steenkamp, a law graduate and model, was hit by at least three rounds, one of which - to the head - killed her almost instantly, the court has heard. "I was simply trying to protect Reeva," Pistorius told the Pretoria High Court at the start of his testimony.




Two foreign UN workers killed in Somalia

A U.N. mission spokesman said it was not clear who was behind the killings. But one witness said the pair were attacked by a man in a police uniform while they sat in their car at Galkayo airport. Abdi Idris, an official in the semi-autonomous Puntland region which administers the airport, gave the nationalities of the two men and said they worked as consultants for the UN anti-drugs agency.


17 killed as bus falls into gorge in Himachal

Shimla, April 7 (IANS) At least 17 people were killed Monday when their overloaded mini-bus rolled down a 400-feet deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district, officials said. Nearly 20 others were injured in the accident that took place at Milla near Shillai in Paonta Sahib subdivision, about 110 km from Shimla, as the bus was on its way from Milla village to Paonta Sahib. Superintendent of Police Sumedha Dwivedi told IANS over phone that all the bodies have been recovered, most of them badly mutilated, from the wreckage of the bus. Transport Minister G.S Bali ordered a committee headed by the sub-divisional magistrate of Paonta Sahib to look into the reasons of the accident, besides constituting a technical committee for the same purpose.


209 FIRs against political parties in Jharkhand

Ranchi, April 7 (IANS) A total of 209 FIRs have been registered against political parties in Jharkhand for violating the model code of conduct, an EC press statement said Monday. "The BJP tops the list with 57 followed by the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) with 33. The number of FIRs filed against the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Congress are 32, 26 and 21 respectively," the Election Commission statement said. The remaining FIRs have been lodged against other parties fighting the Lok Sabha election in the state.


8 Jharkhand kids fall ill after eating outdated biscuits

Ranchi, April 7 (IANS) Eight children fell ill after eating outdated biscuits in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district Monday, police said. According to police, the children living in slum areas of Jharia locality in the district, about 240 km from here, ate the biscuits after picking up the packets from a pond situated close by.
