After Indonesia's surprise election, top party hunts for friends |
By Kanupriya Kapoor and Jonathan Thatcher JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia is set for a period of political uncertainty after an unconvincing election win by the main opposition party which will likely force it to find allies to back its candidate in a July vote for president of Southeast Asia's biggest economy. Investor disquiet at that prospect and a much tougher race to the presidency for the popular candidate of the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDI-P) took its toll on Jakarta shares which were down 3.34 percent by the close. That was about the same percentage that they jumped after the party announced last month it was nominating Jakarta governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo as its candidate for the July 9 presidential election, and whom many opinion polls before Wednesday's parliamentary election said was certain to win in July. "We are talking with many parties right now." The party won just less than 20 percent of the votes in the parliamentary election, according to initial results, the biggest of any party but below a threshold needed to nominate its own presidential candidate.

Narendra Modi discloses marriage for the first time |
Narendra Modi, the Hindu nationalist who is front-runner to become India's next prime minister, has publicly stated for the first time that he is married. Modi has campaigned as the standard bearer of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which polls show will win the biggest chunk of parliamentary seats in the five-week election that started on Monday, but fall short of a majority. Yet the chief minister of Gujarat is a solitary figure who has little contact with his family and entered politics through a grassroots Hindu organisation that prizes celibacy. India's ruling Congress party has repeatedly called for Modi to disclose his marital status, following local reports in recent years that he had an arranged marriage at the age of 17 to a woman whom he soon deserted but never officially divorced.

Car bomb explodes outside Greek central bank building, no one hurt |
By Karolina Tagaris and Renee Maltezou ATHENS (Reuters) - A car bomb exploded outside a central bank building in Athens early on Thursday, smashing windows but causing no injuries, just hours before Greece was due to make its first foray into the international bond markets in four years. The dawn blast, which police believe was carried out by leftist or anarchist guerrilla groups, also came a day before a planned visit to Athens by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. An anonymous caller warned a newspaper about 45 minutes before the explosion just before 6 a.m. (0300 GMT), saying it contained about 70 kg (155 pounds) of explosives, a police official said on condition of anonymity. Witnesses saw debris strewn across the street in one of the busiest parts of central Athens that is lined with banks, shops and a mall.
