Investigators seek Fort Hood gunman's motive after rampage kills 3

REUTERS/Erich SchlegelBy Lisa Maria Garza FORT HOOD, Texas (Reuters) - Investigators delved into the background Thursday of a U.S. soldier who had been treated for mental illness before he killed three people and himself a day earlier at an Army base in Fort Hood, Texas, where another deadly rampage took place in 2009, military officials said. The victims were all military personnel at the massive Army base, which houses many soldiers who have seen combat abroad. The soldier had served four months in Iraq in 2011 and was undergoing evaluation for post-traumatic stress disorder, said Fort Hood commanding officer Lieutenant General Mark Milley. Security officials said preliminary information identified the gunman as Ivan Lopez, but Milley declined to name the shooter, who is married, until his family was notified.

Matthew and Grace Huang were arrested in January last year after their 8-year-old daughter, Gloria, died unexpectedly. "We have just been wrongfully convicted and we feel as if we are being kidnapped by the Qatar judicial system," Matthew Huang said. "This verdict is wrong and appears to be nothing more than an effort to save face." In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said on Thursday that the United States was "surprised and disappointed by the trial court's decision." Harf told a regular news briefing that U.S. officials "have had some concerns throughout the trial by indications that not all of the evidence was weighed by the court and that some cultural misunderstandings may have led to an unfair trial." "We have talked to the government (of Qatar) about this.


Saudi court sentences al-Qaeda ideologue to death - paper

A Saudi Arabian court on Wednesday sentenced a top al-Qaeda strategist to death and jailed 15 others for their role in a series of attacks in the kingdom last decade, Saudi newspapers reported on Thursday. The judge ordered that the body of Faris al-Zahrani, also known as Abu Jandal al-Azdi, be displayed in public after his death in the most severe form of punishment available under the kingdom's Islamic law, al-Madina and Arab News dailies reported. The Saudi authorities ended the campaign by arresting thousands of suspected militants and launching a media campaign to discredit their ideology with the backing of influential clerics and tribal leaders. Zahrani was found guilty of offences that included embracing extremist ideologies, shedding the blood of Muslims and others, targeting security officials, harbouring fugitives and planning the overthrow of Gulf monarchies.


BSF seizes 13 kg heroin in Punjab

Amritsar, April 3 (IANS) In its second major drugs haul within this week, the BSF seized 13 kg of suspected heroin following an gunfight with smugglers near the India-Pakistan border in Punjab, BSF officials said Thursday. The heroin is said to be valued at Rs.65 crore in the international market. The BSF had seized 27 kg heroin, valued at Rs.135 crore, from the Abohar sector in Punjab Tuesday. "BSF personnel at Mullakot observed suspicious movement of smugglers on both sides along border security fence.

The team at the 1,700-year-old Lingyin Temple in the tourist city of Hangzhou is made up of 20 monks and more than 20 security guards, the official Xinhua news agency quoted the temple's Buddhist Master Jueheng as saying. It is the first time a Chinese temple has set up such a team, Xinhua said. "The squad members practice Buddhism in the day and take part in training exercises at night," Jueheng said, adding police helped with the training.




Alleged rape victim commits suicide in West Bengal

Kolkata, April 3 (IANS) A housewife Thursday allegedly committed suicide in West Bengal's Malda district after being raped, police said. Her family members have alleged that she set herself ablaze after a kangaroo court prevented them from a filing a police complaint. We are investigating the matter and we could only say if she was raped after the post-mortem report," said an officer of the Manikchak police station. "We have been informed about a kangaroo court interference in the matter, we are investigating it," said the officer.

Moscow-backed Yanukovich fled Kiev on February 21, the day after the worst of the killings by sniper fire, and was ousted by parliament on February 22. Unidentified Russians were at the headquarters of Ukraine's security service during the protests, which lasted three months, the head of the state security service (SBU) Valentyn Nalyvaichenko said.




Abducted boy found in Ghaziabad
