UN monitors warn on human rights in east Ukraine, Crimea
11:46:08 AM

People stand in a line to enter a polling station and take part in the referendum on the status of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, in MoscowBy Tom Miles and Robert Evans GENEVA (Reuters) - Human rights violations have escalated in eastern Ukraine and serious problems are emerging in Crimea, United Nations monitors said in a report released on Friday. The 34-strong U.N. monitoring mission's report, which covered the period from April 2 to May 6 and which Russia criticised as politically motivated, said police and local authorities in eastern Ukraine connived in illegal acts and the takeover of towns by armed groups, undermining the rule of law. The U.N. findings echoed a statement published on Monday by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, whose experts had identified "a significant number of serious human rights violations" during a visit to Ukraine in March. Ukraine is preparing to hold presidential elections on May 25 and the U.N. monitors said a fair and democratic ballot would be an important factor in helping to calm the situation.

Russia lambasts U.N. report on rights in Ukraine
10:58:59 AM

People stand in a line to enter a polling station and take part in the referendum on the status of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, in MoscowRussia criticised a U.N. report on human rights in Ukraine on Friday, saying it lacked any semblance of objectivity, and accused its authors of following "political orders" to whitewash the pro-Western leadership. The Foreign Ministry said the report demonised pro-Moscow separatists in eastern Ukraine while ignoring "the crudest violations of human rights by the self-proclaimed Kiev authorities." U.N. monitors found an alarming deterioration in the situation in the east and serious problems emerging in Crimea, which has been annexed by Russia, U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay said in a statement accompanying the report. Russia said the report "cast doubt on the independence and impartiality" of the U.N. human rights body.

Three Chinese officials knifed to death in Xinjiang - report
9:43:46 AM
Three Chinese government officials were knifed to death and their bodies dumped in a lake, in the latest incident of violence in the restive far western region of Xinjiang, Radio Free Asia reported. The report said the officials were killed during a visit to Xinjiang last month by President Xi Jinping, in an incident that also featured in the state-backed Global Times newspaper on Friday. The Chinese government has blamed several violent incidents in Xinjiang on Islamist militants and separatists seeking to form an independent state called East Turkestan. The officials were county-level representatives, Radio Free Asia said in its report on Thursday, but did not name them.

9:40:47 AM

A man points to one of the girls abducted by Boko Haram on a screen showing a video of the captives, at the Government House in MaiduguriNigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has cancelled his first visit to the village from which more than 200 schoolgirls were abducted by Islamist rebel group Boko Haram a month ago due to security fears, senior government sources said on Friday. Jonathan will instead fly directly from the capital Abuja to Paris on Friday for a regional summit to discuss the Boko Haram insurgency and wider insecurity and will not now make a stop in the northeastern village of Chibok, said one of the sources. Some Nigerians have criticised the government's initial response to the plight of the girls, who were abducted on April 14, and U.S. officials this week said the government had done too little to adapt to the threat posed by Boko Haram. Nigeria will go to the polls again next year.

How a stand-off at sea led to mob violence in Vietnam
9:10:01 AM

Workers hold banners during a protest in an industrial zone in Binh Duong provinceAs a thousand Vietnamese rioters stormed his factory on Tuesday night, smashing windows and ripping down Chinese-language signs, Taiwanese executive Henry Yeh hid with a colleague in the back of a fire truck, clutching the only weapon he could find: a golf club. I was afraid they would kill us," said Yeh, 27, who works for a Taiwan textile company at an industrial park in the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh City. What started as heated but peaceful nationwide protests against Chinese oil-drilling in a patch of the South China Sea claimed by Vietnam exploded into two days of rioting that left hundreds of Chinese, Taiwanese and Korean factories damaged or destroyed. The Vietnamese government says one person was killed but a doctor at a hospital near one area of rioting said he had seen 21 dead bodies and that at least 100 people were wounded.

"Best before" dates add to food waste - EU paper
9:07:22 AM
By Barbara Lewis ATHENS (Reuters) - "Best before" dates on food add to a mountain of waste in Europe and could be scrapped for some long-life produce, a group of European Union states have argued in a discussion paper prepared for an agriculture ministers meeting on Monday. Food waste in the West has become a hot topic because of its environmental and humanitarian implications. A report last year found up to half of the food produced worldwide was wasted because of poor harvesting, storage and transport methods, as well as irresponsible retailer and consumer behaviour. The discussion paper, seen by Reuters and put forward by the Netherlands and Sweden, says date-labelling in many EU countries is adding to the problem and calls on the European Commission to consider whether products with a very long shelf life could be exempt from best before labels.

8:15:17 AM

A party worker walks past a cut-out of Hindu nationalist Modi, the prime ministerial candidate for India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), inside the party's regional office in MumbaiOpposition candidate Narendra Modi will be the next prime minister of India, with counting trends on Friday showing his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headed for the country's most resounding election in 30 years. Modi has promised to unblock stalled investments in power, road and rail projects to revive economic growth that has fallen to a decade low of below 5 percent. Here are 10 economic reform challenges that would require urgent attention once Modi forms a new government: 1) GOODS AND SERVICES TAX (GST): India's most ambitious indirect tax reform would replace existing state and federal levies with a uniform tax, boosting revenue collection while cutting business transaction costs. GST, which could boost India's economy by up to two percentage points, has so far faced resistance from various states, including those governed by the BJP who fear a loss of their fiscal powers.

Indonesia mulls chemical castration after string of pedophile cases
7:43:29 AM
Indonesia's health minister has proposed the introduction of chemical castration to punish pedophiles in the world's most populous Muslim nation, following a string of headline-grabbing child sex crimes. Indonesia is the latest Asian country to consider chemical castration, with India and Malaysia recently mulling similar measures against rapists and repeat sexual offenders. "Health Minister Nafsiah Mboi proposed chemical castration to deter pedophiles. But we can't comment because it is still being discussed among the ministries," Julian Pasha, spokesman to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, told Reuters on Friday.

Thousands flee Iraq government assault on rebel-held Falluja
7:09:33 AM
By Ned Parker, Isra' al-Rubei'i and Raheem Salman BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Thousands of civilians have fled Falluja since last week after the Iraqi military intensified shelling in a new bid to crush a five-month old Sunni uprising, killing scores of people in what residents describe as massive indiscriminate bombardment. The mortars, artillery and what residents call "barrel bombs" rained for at least seven days on Falluja - a city that was the nemesis of U.S. troops a decade ago and is now the main battle ground in a war pitting the Shi'ite-led government against rebellious Sunni tribal chiefs and an al Qaeda offshoot. More than 420,000 people have already escaped the two main cities of western Anbar province, Falluja and Ramadi, in fighting since the start of the year. Residents say the new pounding of Falluja's residential neighbourhoods appears aimed at driving out all remaining civilians in preparation for an all-out assault to defeat armed groups once and for all.
