Nigeria Islamists attack village near Chibok, 10 dead-witnesses
2:18:47 PM
By Lanre Ola MAIDUGURI Nigeria (Reuters) - Suspected Islamist militants killed at least 10 people on Sunday in an attack on a Nigerian village less than 5 km. (3 miles) from Chibok, the scene of a mass abduction of more than 200 school girls in April, survivors said. Violence in Nigeria's northeast has been relentless in the past year, and has gained in intensity since April, the month that more than 200 schoolgirls were snatched by Boko Haram rebels from Chibok. Samuel Chibok, a survivor of the attack on Kautikiri village, in the Chibok community, said that around 20 men in a Toyota pick-up truck and motorcycles rolled into town. Boko Haram, which is fighting for an Islamic state in largely Muslim northern Nigeria, has killed thousands since launching an uprising on 2009, and many hundreds in the past three months.

Islamist rebels in Somalia kill three as Ramadan starts
12:39:41 PM
By Abdi Sheikh and Feisal Omar MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Islamist rebels shot dead three members of Somalia's security forces in the capital on Sunday, police and witnesses said on the first day of Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month when insurgents had warned they would stage attacks. The government and African Union peacekeepers have stepped up security to try to prevent assaults during the month by the Islamist al Shabaab group, which has waged a seven-year campaign to impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law. Two traffic police men were gunned down by militants on Maka al Mukaram road, a major thoroughfare through the centre of Mogadishu, the commander of traffic police, Ali Hirsi, told Reuters. In a northern district of the city, a soldier was shot dead by men with pistols, shopkeeper Ali Abdullahi said, adding it happened on the street outside his store.

Philippine security forces in south on alert due to terror threat
10:06:38 AM
By Manuel Mogato MANILA (Reuters) - Security forces went on full alert in the southern Philippines on Sunday, police said, after military intelligence reported sightings of Islamist militants in the region after the detention of a top al Qaeda-linked leader. Last week, a team of soldiers and police officers arrested Khair Mundos, an expert bomb-maker and the "spiritual leader" of the Abu Sayyaf faction, which rose to notoriety early last decade by kidnapping foreigners. Mundos is wanted by the United States, which put a $500,000 bounty up for his arrest. "Information received with high reliability, revealed a possible terrorist threat to the peace and security of Region 11, particularly in Davao City," Chief Superintendent Reuben Sindac, national police spokesman, said in a statement.
