The contest pitted former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah against former World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani. A senior U.N. official said the delay was intended to take account of allegations by Abdullah that his rival engaged in mass vote rigging.

The number of people rescued alive has now risen to 27, senior police officer Karuna Sagar told Reuters, as search operations continued. Magistrates are looking to see whether Sarkozy used his influence to secure leaked details of an inquiry into alleged irregularities in his victorious 2007 campaign. In the latest move, acting Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow reassured Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday that Cambodian workers who had fled home after the coup, fearing a crackdown on immigrants, would be welcomed back. He returned from Cambodia on Wednesday, bringing with him Thai activist Veera Somkwamkid, an ultra-nationalist jailed there on charges of espionage and illegal entry for pressing Thailand's claim to a disputed ancient temple on the border. Last month, a Thai army delegation visited China and Malaysia's defence minister came to Thailand, the first visit by a foreign minister since the coup.

The data regulator is probing the experiment and plans to ask Facebook questions, the newspaper reported. It was too early to tell exactly what part of the law Facebook may have infringed, the FT quoted a spokesperson for the ICO as saying. Facebook's psychological experiment on nearly 700,000 unwitting users in 2012 has caused a social-media furor.
