China's state media says teen masterminded killing of pro-Beijing imam in Xinjiang

Still image of Tayir taken from videoChinese police have concluded that an 18-year-old, who was influenced by religious extremism, was the mastermind behind the murder of a state-backed imam in China's western Xinjiang region, state media said on Monday. In late July, three suspected Islamist militants armed with knives and axes attacked Juma Tayir, a well-known pro-government Uighur who led prayers at China's biggest mosque, in Xinjiang, according to Chinese authorities. Two of the attackers were later shot dead by police while the third, Nurmemet Abidili, was arrested. Xinjiang, home to the Muslim Uighur people, who speak a Turkic language, has been beset by violence for years.




Thai king endorses junta leader as prime minister

Approval from King Bhumibol Adulyadej is a formality. The interim government will be set up in the coming weeks, although power will remain firmly in the junta's hands. "His Majesty the King has endorsed General Prayuth Chan-ocha as prime minister to govern the country from this day onwards," the Royal Gazette said in a statement published on its official website on Monday.




Hip-hop mogul Suge Knight shot in Los Angeles

SUGE KNIGHT AT PREMIERE OF BAD BOYS II.Hip-hop music mogul Suge Knight was among three people shot and injured early on Sunday morning at a nightclub in West Hollywood, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. "We can confirm that the person known as Suge Knight has been identified as one of several victims in a shooting in West Hollywood," a spokesman for the department told Reuters. Knight, 49, and another man, aged 32, and a woman, 19, were wounded, transported to local hospitals and expected to recover, the department said in a statement. TMZ entertainment news website reported that Knight was leaving a pre-MTV Video Music Awards party at the 1OAK club on Sunset Strip and that he was in intensive care after undergoing surgery at Cedars-Sinai Hospital.




Sony PlayStation Network taken down by attack

Sony Corp's headquarters is pictured in TokyoSony Corp said on Sunday its PlayStation Network was taken down by a denial of service-style attack and the FBI was investigating the diversion of a flight carrying a top Sony executive amid reports of a claim that explosives were on board. The company said in a posting on its PlayStation blog that no personal information of the network was accessed in the attack, which overwhelmed the system with heavy traffic. A plane carrying Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley was diverted on Sunday, Smedley said in a post on microblogging site Twitter. The group also used Twitter to claim credit for the network attack, the newspaper said.
