U.S. says American journalist freed after being held in Syria since 2012

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - American journalist Theo Curtis has been released after being kidnapped in Syria two years ago, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday. Kerry said in a statement that the United States was using "every diplomatic, intelligence and military tool" at its disposal to secure the release of other Americans held hostage in Syria. The news of Curtis' release came just days after what Kerry called "unspeakable tragedy." Islamic State militants this week killed American journalist James Foley, who was kidnapped in Syria in 2012. ...


Britain says it close to identifying beheading suspect

By Babak Dehghanpisheh and Eric Beech BAGHDAD/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Britain is close to identifying a suspected British national shown beheading American journalist James Foley in a video released by Islamic State militants last week, the British ambassador to the United States said on Sunday. With Islamic State fighters now in control of vast areas of northern Iraq, the country's prime minister-designate, Haider al-Abadi, used a meeting with the visiting Iranian foreign minister to call for greater international efforts to destroy the Islamist group. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of Iran, a Shi'ite Muslim power likely to wield influence over the formation of Abadi's new cabinet, reaffirmed Tehran's support for Iraq's territorial unity and its fight against militants.

Kidnappers in Syria on Sunday freed a U.S. The Qatari-owned television station named the journalist as Peter Theo Curtis, and said he had been handed over to a representative of the United Nations. His reported release happened just days after the Islamic State militant group fighting in Iraq and Syria issued a video shown the beheading of American journalist James Foley.

SUGE KNIGHT BACK AT WORK AT DEATH ROW RECORDS.Hip-hop music mogul Suge Knight was shot and injured early on Sunday morning at a nightclub in West Hollywood in an incident involving several victims, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. "We can confirm that the person known as Suge Knight has been identified as one of several victims in a shooting in West Hollywood," a spokesman for the department told Reuters. TMZ entertainment news website reported that Knight was leaving a pre-MTV Video Music Awards party at the 1OAK club on Sunset Strip and that he was in intensive care after undergoing surgery at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. TMZ said he had multiple bullet wounds.




UK says is close to identifying Briton suspected of beheading

"We are close" to identifying the man in the video, Westmacott told CNN's "State of the Union" program on Sunday. British authorities are trying to identify the man, who has a London accent and has been dubbed "Jihadi John" by British media. The masked figure beheaded Foley in a video released on Tuesday that also threatened a second captive American journalist, Steven Sotloff.

Some bandaged, some limping, the men were marched up one of Donetsk's main streets and past the remains of Ukrainian armoured personnel carriers destroyed in battle and put on display in the city's main Lenin Square. For days, separatists have prepared for the march, timed to coincide with Independence Day celebrations and a military parade in Kiev where Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called for solidarity against the rebels. Kiev blames Russia for fanning the conflict by sending fighters and weapons to eastern Ukraine through rebel-held border regions.
