Ukrainian city stocks up as a long siege looms

People in the east Ukraine city are stocking up flour, canned food, cooking oil, instant coffee, candles and batteries as government forces tighten the noose around pro-Russian separatists occupying the city. We can't afford to leave the city, we're not that rich." After nearly four months of occupation and violence, the most popular phrase in the city has become: "Live until tomorrow." The rebels, who took over the Donetsk administration's offices and erected barricades around them in mid-April, are still in charge of the sprawling city, the main hub of the Donbass coal-mining region.




Roadside bomb kills three women, wounds seven in Somali capital

Three women were killed in the Somali capital on Sunday, and seven others were wounded when a remotely detonated bomb exploded in a busy market, police and witnesses said. In recent weeks, al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab insurgents have increased gun and bomb attacks in Mogadishu, with the latest incident on July 5, when its fighters attacked the presidential palace. The women killed in the blast were city workers, who were cleaning the streets when a bomb hidden in a rubbish pit exploded in the busy market sector known as Hodan district of Mogadishu, police said. The bomb was wrapped in a big, black plastic bag and then placed inside the rubbish along the Taleh street," Nuria Ahmed, a mother of four who lives near the scene, told Reuters.


Chairman of Syndicate Bank arrested on bribery allegations

Police arrested the chairman of mid-sized state-run lender Syndicate Bank Ltd late on Saturday over allegations of taking bribes to grant loan extensions to a company, a police spokeswoman said. The Central Bureau of Investigation, India's top crime-fighting agency, has filed a case against Syndicate Bank Chairman Sudhir Kumar Jain and 11 others, including two directors of a Delhi-based company, and is further investigating the allegations, it said in a statement. The CBI said it recovered 5 million rupees ($81,700) that was allegedly being paid to by a private company to the bank's head through middlemen to win extensions on loans after defaulting on repayments. "We've taken him into custody," CBI spokeswoman Kanchan Prasad told Reuters on Sunday.
