During his ten day trip to North Korea, Fowle's fellow travellers described the middle-aged street repairs worker from Miamisburg, Ohio as a warm, amiable, quiet man. On May 4, towards the end of an evening spent eating and drinking in Chongjin, a large industrial city on North Korea's east coast, Fowle's action led to him being thrown in jail, where he is awaiting trial in one of the world's most inhospitable countries. He was arrested three days later at the airport where he was due to board a flight out of North Korea.

Anti-immigration protesters wave flags at motorists on a highway overpass on Murrieta Hot Springs Blvd in MurrietaBy David Lawder and Richard Cowan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives voted on Friday to crack down on Central American migrants, including unaccompanied children, who are flooding to the U.S. border with Mexico, as lawmakers passed a $694 million border security bill. The 223-189 vote came one day after conservative Republicans balked at an earlier version of the measure, exposing a deep rift between Tea Party activists and more mainstream Republicans. In passing the retooled bill, the Republican-led House ignored a veto threat from the White House. "We couldn't go home (for recess) and not have a decision," said Representative Kay Granger of Texas, who helped draft the original bill.

The House of Representatives approved the funding by a 395-8 vote late on Friday, several hours after the Senate passed it unanimously. The money would be used to replenish Israel's arsenal of Iron Dome interceptor missiles, many of which have been used to shoot down short-range rockets fired from Gaza into populated areas of Israel in the current three-week-long conflict. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether Obama would sign the legislation.

A package that looked like a small black backpack had been left near the railings that separate the White House grounds from the street, the witness reported.
