INSIGHT - Islamic State turns radical Islam on Syria Muslims |
As Islamic State militants advanced in the Syrian province of Deir al-Zor last month, those who had held out against them faced a simple choice: beg for mercy or face certain death. Defeated fighters were required to "atone" or die, a choice set out in Islamic terms and implying that resisting Islamic State rule amounted to a sin against God. "I surrendered my weapons," said a rebel fighter who capitulated to Islamic State on July 2 and has been living in fear for his life ever since. He still believes Islamic State could execute him at any moment.

Afghan candidate threatens to pull out of election process |
By Jessica Donati and Hamid Shalizi KABUL (Reuters) - One of two candidates competing to succeed Afghan leader Hamid Karzai threatened on Tuesday to pull out of a U.N.-backed audit of a disputed presidential election. The investigation is part of a U.S.-brokered deal between presidential candidates Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, both of whom claim to have won the election that was hoped would usher in Afghanistan's first democratic transfer of power. The crisis over the outcome of the vote has raised the spectre of another round of war in Afghanistan, already torn apart by decades of fighting. On Tuesday, Abdullah's team said the United Nations had until Wednesday to accept their demands to widen the criteria for identifying and discarding ballots deemed fraudulent from a June run-off vote.

Exclusive - Chipmaker Qualcomm may face EU antitrust probe -sources |
By Foo Yun Chee BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Qualcomm, the world's No. 1 mobile chipmaker, may face a European investigation related to a four-year-old complaint from a subsidiary of rival Nvidia Corp, three people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. An EU probe would come at an awkward time for Qualcomm, which is seeking to end an investigation by China's pricing regulator into monopoly practices. "The Commission may open a case after the summer," said one of the sources, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter. British cellphone chipmaker Icera, acquired by Nvidia Corp in 2011, took its grievances to the European Commission in June 2010, accusing Qualcomm of anti-competitive behaviour.
