By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court declined on Monday to decide once and for all whether states can ban gay marriage, a surprising move that will allow gay men and women to get married in five additional states, with more likely to follow quickly. On the first day of its new term, the high court without comment rejected appeals in cases involving five states - Virginia, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and Indiana - that had prohibited gay marriage, leaving intact lower-court rulings striking down those bans. ...

By Ed Stoddard JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's Kruger National Park is inviting bids for rhinos under a plan to move 500 of the animals to safety to counter a wave of poaching for their horns, highly prized in some Asian countries as a sign of wealth. In newspaper ads on Sunday, South African National Parks invited potential buyers to "make a written offer to purchase white rhinos in batches of 20 or more". Private ranchers own around 5,000 of South Africa's 20,000 rhinos, part of a thriving game farming industry in Africa's most advanced economy that caters to eco-toursim and hunting. ...

By Edmund Blair NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's president said on Monday he would attend a hearing at the International Criminal Court this week, the first sitting world leader to appear in The Hague-based court, although he said he would be going in a personal capacity. Uhuru Kenyatta told parliament he was appointing his deputy, William Ruto, as acting president in his absence to avoid putting the "sovereignty of more than 40 million Kenyans on trial" and would not attend in his position as head of state. Kenyatta faces charges of orchestrating ethnic killings after the contested 2007 election. ...
