LONDON (Reuters) - A former Sunday Mirror journalist is to be charged with hacking phones 13 years ago, prosecutors said on Thursday. Graham Johnson is accused of intercepting mobile phone voicemail messages between August and October 2001. He will appear before London's Westminster Magistrates' Court on Nov. 6. "We have decided there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and that a prosecution is in the public interest," Gregor McGill, a senior lawyer at the Crown Prosecution Service, said in a statement. ...

Spanish PM Rajoy answers a question during the weekly   control session at parliament in MadridMADRID (Reuters) - Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Wednesday that a new "chapter of dialogue" was being opened with Catalonia after the northeastern region dropped plans to hold a referendum on independence from Spain next month. But Rajoy also threatened to block a non-binding "consultation" ballot which Catalonia says it will hold instead, if it were found to be illegal. China broadcaster says Xinjiang attack mastermind sought Islamic state

BEIJING (Reuters) - A mastermind of violence in China's Xinjiang region in which almost 100 people were killed sought to establish an Islamic state, official media said on Wednesday, reinforcing government warnings about an Islamist threat. A court in the far western region sentenced 12 people to death on Monday for an attack in Xinjiang's southern Yarkant county on July 28, in which the government said 59 "terrorists" were gunned down by security forces, while 37 civilians were killed. ...


Malaysia arrests 13 people suspected of Islamic State links

By Trinna Leong KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian authorities said on Wednesday they had arrested 13 Malaysians suspected of having links to Islamic State and who were planning to leave for Syria. Police on Monday raided a restaurant in Shah Alam, a suburb 30 minutes from the capital of Kuala Lumpur, after authorities discovered the group, which included women, was making plans to leave Malaysia. Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr was detained in July 2012 after backing mass protests that erupted in February 2011 in the Qatif district of eastern Saudi Arabia, which is home to many of the Sunni-ruled country's Shi'ite minority. Last year a prosecutor said he was seeking to convict Nimr for "aiding terrorists" and "waging war on God", which carry the death penalty. ...
