Waving rainbow flags, embracing and crying, two thousand people gathered to watch the official results in the courtyard of Dublin Castle after voters, young and old, accounted for one of the highest turnouts in a referendum for decades. "The amount of people who came out to vote is just such an emotional thing for us," said Fred Schelbaum, 48, standing with his civil partner Feargal Scott, 43, who he said he intended to marry.

Kevin Hyland, who took up the new role last year, is lobbying world leaders to support a commitment to end forced labour and slavery of all forms in a set of global development goals to be adopted at the United Nations in September. While slavery is illegal in every country on earth, an estimated 36 million people are trapped in modern slavery. |

The demonstration in January caught the world's attention after the death of 32-year-old protester Shaimaa Sabbagh was caught on video. The public prosecutor has separately charged a police officer who allegedly fired birdshot to try to disperse the protest in connection with Sabbagh's death.

By a vote of 54-45, the Senate failed to reach the 60-vote threshold needed to advance a bill that would have extended for two months provisions of the "USA Patriot Act" that allow the collection of vast amounts of telephone "metadata." The data collection program, in which the National Security Agency sweeps up vast amounts of Americans' telephone records and business information, was exposed two years ago by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who is now a fugitive in Russia. The vote against the extension came after the Senate narrowly blocked the "USA Freedom Act," a bill that would end the bulk telephone data collection and replace it with a more targeted program. |
| Irish voters back gay marriage in 'social revolution' | |  By Padraic Halpin and Conor Humphries DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish voters backed same-sex marriage by a landslide in a referendum marking a dramatic social shift in the traditionally Catholic country, government ministers and opponents of the bill said on Saturday. Final results were not expected until around 5 p.m. (1600 GMT), but ministers predicted Ireland had become the first country to adopt same-sex marriage via a popular vote, by a margin of around two-to-one, just two decades after it decriminalised homosexuality. With over a third of the results in, all 17 of the 43 voting areas to declare had backed gay marriage.

| Cleveland officer found not guilty in fatal shooting of two unarmed suspects | | | (Reuters) - A Cleveland police officer was found not guilty on Saturday of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting deaths of a man and a woman who led police on a 25-minute high-speed chase in 2012. Judge John O'Donnell announced the verdict in the case of Officer Michael Brelo, 31, who, if convicted, would have faced three to 11 years in prison for the fatal shooting of the two unarmed African-American suspects, Malissa Williams and Timothy Russell. |
