A pro-democracy protester with a yellow umbrella join hundreds of others to take to the streets before the June 4th Tiananmen anniversary, in Hong KongBy James Pomfret HONG KONG (Reuters) - Talks between Chinese officials and Hong Kong democrats ended in stalemate on Sunday, with democrats sticking by plans to veto a vote on political reforms in mid-June that could become a fresh flashpoint after last year's massive pro-democracy protests. Hong Kong, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997, was roiled by 79 days of mass demonstrations and street occupations late last year over how its next leader is chosen in 2017. Democrats want a leader chosen by universal suffrage, rather than from a list of pro-Beijing candidates as China is insisting.

By Rachel Armstrong and Rujun Shen SINGAPORE (Reuters) - China will base its decision on establishing an air defense identification zone around disputed waters in the South China Sea on its assessment of the security situation, a senior Chinese military official said on Sunday. Land reclamation work by China around disputed islands has led to speculation it will declare an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), which will require overflying aircraft to identify themselves to Chinese authorities. Admiral Sun Jianguo, a deputy chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army, told a regional security forum that China's actions are peaceful and legitimate, calling on other countries to stop trying to "sow discord" over the matter.

In a move sparked by Islamic State's military conquests, the 15-nation Security Council adopted a resolution last September at a meeting chaired by U.S. President Barack Obama demanding that all states "prevent and suppress" the recruitment and travel of militant fighters to foreign conflicts.
