Catholic faithfuls participate in a procession for the late archbishop of San Salvador Oscar Arnulfo Romero during a procession in San SalvadorBy Nelson Renteria SAN SALVADOR (Reuters) - Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero was beatified on Saturday, the final step before sainthood, 35 years after he was gunned down at the altar by a right-wing death squad for denouncing the oppression of the poor by the military dictatorship. Roman Catholics from around the world mixed with former Marxist rebels from El Salvador's brutal civil war as over 250,000 people gathered in the capital to celebrate the country priest who confronted the U.S.-backed government. Cardinal Angelo Amato, sent by Pope Francis, officiated the ceremony that followed decades of debate over whether Romero had rejected Church doctrine by embracing radical, left-wing rebels.

Judge John O'Donnell said Officer Michael Brelo, 31, acted reasonably in shooting the two suspects while standing on the hood of their surrounded car and firing multiple rounds through the windshield. It followed a series of high-profile deaths of unarmed black men in confrontations with police officers, which have prompted sometimes violent demonstrations.

Waving rainbow flags, embracing and crying, two thousand people gathered to watch the official results in the courtyard of Dublin Castle after voters, young and old, accounted for one of the highest turnouts in a referendum for decades. "The amount of people who came out to vote is just such an emotional thing for us," said Fred Schelbaum, 48, standing with his civil partner Feargal Scott, 43, who he said he intended to marry.

The top political official of a major city in southwest China has been placed under official investigation, the country's graft busting agency said. Yu Yuanhui, the Communist Party secretary of Nanning, capital city of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is being investigated for "severe disciplinary and law violation," a common euphemism for corruption, according to a statement by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. Yu, who studied at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government a decade ago, is also a member of the standing committee of the regional government.

Around 40 hooded anti-establishment protesters threw petrol bombs and stones at riot police in central Athens on Saturday, setting fire a trolley bus. Police fired teargas to try and control the crowd outside Athens Polytechnic University, near the central Exarchia district, a Bohemian quarter popular with artists and left-wing intellectuals. Last month anti-establishment protesters occupied several public buildings and briefly entered the grounds of parliament, calling for the release of jailed members of a Marxist group.

By Chris Arsenault VATICAN CITY (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Britain's anti-slavery commissioner received the backing of the Catholic Church on Saturday for a campaign to push for a global pact vowing to eradicate slavery in the next 15 years. Kevin Hyland, who took up the new role last year, is lobbying world leaders to support a commitment to end forced labour and slavery of all forms in a set of global development goals to be adopted at the United Nations in September. While slavery is illegal in every country on earth, an estimated 36 million people are trapped in modern slavery.

Protesters calling for Taiwan not to join the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank clashed with unidentified men in black T-shirts outside a meeting of officials from the two administrations on a Taiwanese island on Saturday. The Taiwan Solidarity Union, which organised the rally, accused China of being behind the attacks, without going into further detail. Anti-China activists have launched regular demonstrations in Taiwan in recent months, saying they fear economic colonisation from the mainland after nearly a decade of slow rapprochement between the historic enemies.

Flowers are seen left at the spot where activist Shaimaa Sabbagh died during a protest on Saturday, in central CairoBy Haitham Ahmed CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court on Saturday acquitted 17 people of violating a strict protest law earlier this year at a march commemorating a 2011 uprising, judicial sources said, a rare decision since Egypt introduced the statute in late 2013. The demonstration in January caught the world's attention after the death of 32-year-old protester Shaimaa Sabbagh was caught on video. The public prosecutor has separately charged a police officer who allegedly fired birdshot to try to disperse the protest in connection with Sabbagh's death.

Fate of U.S. domestic surveillance program uncertain after Senate vote
3:26:34 PM
By Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate blocked a measure to extend spy agencies' bulk collection of Americans' telephone records early on Saturday, leaving the fate of the program uncertain days before its June 1 expiration. By a vote of 54-45, the Senate failed to reach the 60-vote threshold needed to advance a bill that would have extended for two months provisions of the "USA Patriot Act" that allow the collection of vast amounts of telephone "metadata." The data collection program, in which the National Security Agency sweeps up vast amounts of Americans' telephone records and business information, was exposed two years ago by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who is now a fugitive in Russia. The vote against the extension came after the Senate narrowly blocked the "USA Freedom Act," a bill that would end the bulk telephone data collection and replace it with a more targeted program.

Final results were not expected until around 5 p.m. (1600 GMT), but ministers predicted Ireland had become the first country to adopt same-sex marriage via a popular vote, by a margin of around two-to-one, just two decades after it decriminalised homosexuality. With over a third of the results in, all 17 of the 43 voting areas to declare had backed gay marriage.
