| Police arrest suspected IS "coordinator" in Bangladesh | |  By Serajul Quadir DHAKA (Reuters) - Police in Bangladesh have arrested a suspected member of Islamic State (IS) in Dhaka, a senior officer said on Sunday, following the detention days earlier of two other suspects, including an IT manager at a subsidiary of Coca-Cola Co. The suspect picked up on Saturday night was a coordinator for IS in Bangladesh, Shaikh Nazmul Alam, a deputy commissioner of Detective and Criminal Intelligence Division, told Reuters. Police said the detained man was Abdullah al Galib, a former member of Hizbut Tahrir, and a follower of Ansarullah Bangla Team, two militant Islamist groups in Muslim-majority Bangladesh.

| International effort rescues over 5,000 Mediterranean migrants | |  By Gavin Jones ROME (Reuters) - The corpses of 17 migrants were brought ashore in Sicily aboard an Italian naval vessel on Sunday along with 454 survivors as efforts intensified to rescue people fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. More than 5,000 migrants trying to reach Europe have been saved from boats in distress in the Mediterranean since Friday and operations are in progress to rescue 500 more, European Union authorities said on Sunday. In some of the most intense Mediterranean traffic of the year, migrants who left Libya in 25 boats were picked up by ships from Italy, Britain, Malta and Belgium, assisted by planes from Iceland and Finland, the EU's border control agency Frontex said.

Before being turned away, Reuters reporters saw hundreds of migrants - some rake thin - crammed on the deck of the converted Thai fishing boat that had been intercepted in the Andaman Sea on Friday and held in the waters off Leik island. Some were sat on two of the four Myanmar navy vessels standing off the fishing boat, which had been discovered carrying 727 migrants. |
| Hong Kong democrats intent on vetoing vote as talks with China fizzle | |  By James Pomfret HONG KONG (Reuters) - Talks between Chinese officials and Hong Kong democrats ended in stalemate on Sunday, with democrats sticking by plans to veto a vote on political reforms in mid-June that could become a fresh flashpoint after last year's massive pro-democracy protests. Hong Kong, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997, was roiled by 79 days of mass demonstrations and street occupations late last year over how its next leader is chosen in 2017. Democrats want a leader chosen by universal suffrage, rather than from a list of pro-Beijing candidates as China is insisting.
