Egyptian court sentences eight militants to death for army attack - sources

Iranian authorities have not released details of any charges and pressed on with the case despite calls from U.S. President Barack Obama, family members and rights groups for Rezaian's release and more information on the charges. The case has put pressure on U.S.-Iranian relations, while Tehran, Washington and five other world powers have been trying to hammer out a deal to end a decade-old standoff over Iran's nuclear programme.




Takata faces questions over air bag fix as recalls expand

Takata, 11 automakers that used its air bag technology and U.S. safety regulators are pursuing separate efforts to determine the root cause of problems linked to at least six deaths. Replacement inflators that are currently being installed could eventually need to be replaced if it turns out that the real problem was not addressed before Takata began making parts to fix about 34 million vehicles covered by the expanded U.S. recall announced last week, several industry officials familiar with the probes said.




U.S. man charged with conspiracy to provide support to Islamic State

By Lindsay Dunsmuir WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Houston-area man was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to Islamic State by attempting to fight for the militant group in Syria, the U.S. Department of Justice said on Tuesday. Asher Abid Khan, 20, of Spring, Texas, was arrested on Tuesday morning and was due to appear in federal court in Houston later in the day. According to a criminal complaint, Khan and a Texas-based friend, identified only as S.R.G. by prosecutors, plotted on Facebook to join Islamic State in Syria in January 2014 and left for Syria the following month.


U.S. authorities probe 11 threats to international flights

RTR4WH70 (layout (comp))U.S. government agencies are investigating at least 11 threats against specific international commercial flights on Monday afternoon, apparently phoned in to police by the same person, U.S. officials said on Tuesday. One flight, Air France flight 22 from Paris was escorted by two U.S. F-15 fighter jets to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after authorities received a threat, said the officials, who asked not to be identified. The plane landed safely and was cleared with no incidents or hazards reported by passengers or crew, said J. Peter Donald, an FBI spokesman.




Poachers decimate Mozambique elephant population

The results of a survey indicate the southern African nation's elephant population fell to 10,300 from 20,000 five years ago, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) said in a statement. "This decline is due to rampant elephant poaching," WCS said.
