| U.S. man charged with conspiracy to provide support to Islamic State | | | By Lindsay Dunsmuir WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Houston-area man was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to Islamic State by attempting to fight for the militant group in Syria, the U.S. Department of Justice said on Tuesday. Asher Abid Khan, 20, of Spring, Texas, was arrested on Tuesday morning and was due to appear in federal court in Houston later in the day. According to a criminal complaint, Khan and a Texas-based friend, identified only as S.R.G. by prosecutors, plotted on Facebook to join Islamic State in Syria in January 2014 and left for Syria the following month. |
| U.S. authorities probe 11 threats to international flights | |  U.S. government agencies are investigating at least 11 threats against specific international commercial flights on Monday afternoon, apparently phoned in to police by the same person, U.S. officials said on Tuesday. One flight, Air France flight 22 from Paris was escorted by two U.S. F-15 fighter jets to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after authorities received a threat, said the officials, who asked not to be identified. The plane landed safely and was cleared with no incidents or hazards reported by passengers or crew, said J. Peter Donald, an FBI spokesman.

| Poachers decimate Mozambique elephant population | |  Mozambique has lost half its elephants over the past five years, part of a wave of poaching driven by red-hot demand for ivory from fast-growing Asian economies such as China and Vietnam, a conservation organisation said on Tuesday. The results of a survey indicate the southern African nation's elephant population fell to 10,300 from 20,000 five years ago, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) said in a statement. "This decline is due to rampant elephant poaching," WCS said.

| Teenager in Austrian 'Playstation' terrorism case gets 2 years | | | A 14-year-old boy from Austria who downloaded bomb-making plans onto his Playstation games console was sentenced to a two-year jail term on Tuesday after pleading guilty to terrorism charges, a court spokeswoman said. As well as researching how to build a bomb, the boy made contact with militants supporting the Islamic State jihadist group in Syria, prosecutors said ahead of the trial. Islamic State, which claimed Friday's attack on a Shi'ite mosque, is trying to stir up sectarian confrontation as a way of hastening the overthrow of the ruling Al Saud, and is keenly aware of the war's potential for pitting Sunni against Shi'ite. Saudi authorities have avoided using openly sectarian terms to describe the Houthis, allies of Iran who adhere to the Zaydi sect of Shi'ite Islam, but many journalists, clerics and social media users have shown no such restraint.
