(Reuters) - A 21-year-old white man accused of murdering nine people in a historic black South Carolina church appeared in court on Friday by closed-circuit television from the jail where he was brought after his arrest at the end of a 14-hour manhunt. Dylann Roof, 21, stood quietly through the hearing, providing brief answers to the judge's questions, confirming his name and address and saying he was unemployed before family members of several of the nine worshippers he is alleged to have shot dead at the nearly-200-year-old Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church spoke. Judge James Gosnell, who had no authority to release Roof on the nine murder charges he faces, set a bond of $1 million for the one gun charge he faces.




Thousands lose power when naked woman crashes into Seattle-area utility pole

More than 4,000 people in a Seattle suburb lost power on Friday after a woman driving naked crashed her car into a utility pole, police said. There were live power wires down on the car when a police sergeant came across the crash scene in Shoreline, just north of Seattle, around 1:30 a.m., said Detective Jason Houck, a spokesman for the King County Sheriff's Department. Firefighters and utility crews disabled the wires and found a 24-year-old woman inside the car who was in and out of consciousness, he said.

Carved pieces of confiscated ivory are placed out to   be crushed in New York's Times SquareBy Katie Reilly NEW YORK (Reuters) - More than a ton of ivory confiscated from New York and Philadelphia was crushed in Times Square on Friday to show intolerance for elephant poaching and the illegal ivory trade, federal wildlife authorities said. The carved ivory, some of it still in the form of an elephant's tusk, was on display on a table in Times Square. "This is an illegal product and we feel that burning it or destroying it gets it out of commercial use and, therefore, there's less of a chance for it to find its way into the marketplace," said Wildlife Conservation Society spokesman John Calvelli.




Afghan leader extends parliament's term, promises election date

Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani speaks during a   news conference in KabulPresident Ashraf Ghani's office said the decision to let the existing parliament stay on had been taken in consultation with the judiciary, the legislative and the executive, and a new election date would be announced in a month. Both Ghani and rival Abdullah Abdullah claimed victory after last year's presidential vote was marred by accusations of widespread fraud on both sides. It took months for them to agree to a U.S.-brokered deal to form a unity government with Ghani as president and Abdullah as chief executive.




News Corp must face Dial, Heinz ad monopoly class action - judge

By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - News Corp has been ordered by a Manhattan federal judge to face a class action lawsuit accusing it of monopolizing the market for in-store promotions at some 52,500 retail stores across the United States. U.S. District Judge William Pauley said consumer packaged goods companies such as Dial Corp, H.J. Heinz Co and Smithfield Foods Inc may pursue their antitrust claims as a group, potentially boosting overall damages. News Corp spokeswoman Laura Adams said the company, which is controlled by Rupert Murdoch, is reviewing Thursday's decision.


English city stunned by family's flight to join Islamic State
