Italian prosecutors seek trial for Bank of China over money smuggling

The document, a formal request by the prosecutor seen by Reuters on Saturday, stems from an investigation called "River of Money" that started in 2008 and points to the growing influence of Chinese criminal groups in Italy's Tuscany region. The investigating prosecutors allege various crimes, including money laundering and tax evasion, according to the 170-page document signed by Florence prosecutor Giulio Monferini.

(Reuters) - At Dooley's Bait shop in Lexington, South Carolina, the talk around the worm bins and minnow tanks was dominated by one subject: Dylann Roof, a previously unremarkable local young man now accused of one of most shocking murders in state history. Roof, a 21-year-old white man who went to high school in this Southern town near the state capital, has been charged with murdering nine African-Americans in cold blood on Wednesday at a landmark church in Charleston, about 100 miles (160 km) away. Many people in Lexington, as in towns across South Carolina, struggled to come to grips with one of their own being charged with such a heinous crime.

Many of the local landmarks shown in the photos appeared chosen to highlight Charleston's segregated past and to touch a nerve with the city's black community by singling out sites with a special importance and sensitivity in African-American history. Roof, a 21-year-old white man, was arrested on Thursday and charged with the murders of nine African-Americans at the Emanuel African Methodist Church in downtown Charleston.

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama blamed public apathy combined with the tight "grip" on Congress of the National Rifle Association, the powerful U.S. gun lobby, for blocking stricter gun laws. Speaking during an interview recorded on Friday, just two days after the mass shooting at a black church in South Carolina, Obama said he did not foresee any quick changes to gun laws. "Unfortunately, the grip of the NRA on Congress is extremely strong," Obama said in a clip of the interview with "WTF with Marc Maron" posted by the New York Times.

(Reuters) - Heavily-armed police converged on towns in western New York state on Saturday to investigate possible sightings of two convicted murderers who escaped a maximum-security prison two weeks ago, police said. A witness saw two men who might have been the escapees walking along a railroad track in Friendship, a community of about 2,000 residents in a rural patch of Allegany County, New York State Police said in a statement. Police set up a perimeter in the area of Friendship, about 280 miles (450 km) southwest of the Clinton Correctional Facility where the escaped convicts had been serving sentences for murder, said New York State Police spokesman Beau Duffy.




Los Angeles police shoot unarmed man who raised towel-covered hand

(Reuters) - Los Angeles police shot and critically wounded an unarmed man after he raised his towel-wrapped hand at officers who thought he was brandishing a gun, a department spokeswoman said on Saturday. The man, in his 30s, was walking on a busy street in the Los Feliz neighborhood and "appeared to be in distress" when police approached him around 6:30 p.m. local time on Friday, Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Rosario Herrera said. A passing motorist recorded police arresting the man, who appears to be bleeding from the head, and posted the video online, the Los Angeles Times reported.

(Reuters) - A website has surfaced with a racist manifesto and a series of photographs that appear to show Dylann Roof, the suspect in Wednesday's Charleston church massacre, posing with a handgun and standing in front of a Confederate military museum and a plantation house. Roof, a 21-year old white man, was arrested on Thursday and charged with the murders of nine African-Americans at the Emanuel African Methodist Church in downtown Charleston. Authorities say he spent an hour in Bible study with parishioners at the historically black church before opening fire on them on Wednesday evening.


German police arrest Al Jazeera journalist in Berlin - lawyer

A leading Al Jazeera journalist was arrested at a Berlin airport on Saturday at the request of Egypt, a lawyer for the Qatar-based satellite network said, a move he described as part of a crackdown by Cairo on the channel. International lawyer Saad Djebbar told Reuters Ahmed Mansour, one of the most senior journalists on the channel's Arabic service, had been abruptly and unexpectedly arrested in Germany. A spokesman for the German Federal Police confirmed that a 52-year-old man was arrested at Berlin's Tegel airport at 1320 GMT following an international arrest warrant from the Egyptian authorities.

At the conclusion, the author provides a cryptic "explanation," for action, saying "I have no choice... I chose Charleston because it is most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country.


Man kills three by ploughing SUV into Austrian shoppers

A driver killed three people and injured 34 on Saturday in the Austrian city of Graz when he ploughed a vehicle at high speed into a crowded shopping street, police said. The driver of the sport-utility vehicle (SUV), a 26-year-old Austrian of Bosnian origin known to police for domestic violence, was detained. Eyewitnesses cited by the public broadcaster ORF said the vehicle had been travelling at about 100 kph (62 mph).

Holding banners saying "End Austerity Now" and "Defy Tory Rule", protesters had marched from the Bank of England in the heart of London's financial district, in a rally which organisers said drew several hundred thousand people. Police declined to estimate numbers for the event, which featured speeches from celebrities such as singer Charlotte Church and comedian Russell Brand as well as trade unionists and Labour Party leadership contender Jeremy Corbyn.

(Reuters) - Mourners arrived in Charleston from around the United States on Saturday to pay their respects to nine black churchgoers killed in an attack this week, with services planned throughout the day ahead of a rally in the state capital later in the evening. Crowds began to gather at the Emanuel African Methodist Church, the site of Wednesday's killings in downtown Charleston, early on Saturday morning. At the memorial site in front of the church, the oldest African-American congregation in the southern United States, flowers were laid six feet deep in places.
