| A Kuwaiti court sentenced a prominent female human rights activist to three years in jail on charges of insulting the country's ruler on Sunday, newspapers in the country reported. "The Criminal Court today sentenced Rana al-Sadoun to three years with hard labour in the case of her repeating a speech by Musallam al-Barrak," Kuwaiti newspaper al-Qabas said. Musallam al-Barrak, a former member of parliament, this year began serving a two-year term for a 2012 speech criticising an election law which he and other opposition politicians said was intended to prevent them getting power. |

Ahmed Mansour, a leading talk show host on the channel's Arabic service, was arrested in Germany on Saturday. Egypt accuses Al Jazeera of being a mouthpiece of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Qatar-backed Islamist movement which President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi toppled in 2013 when he was army chief and accuses of being a terrorist group. |

Outside the church, the oldest African-American congregation in the southern United States, bouquets, teddy bears and balloons covered the sidewalk while hundreds of people lined up to mourn, sing hymns and leave memorials. Thousands of hand-written messages covered white banners at the church's entrance, reading "God Bless," or "Thank you Sen. Rev. Clementa Pinckney.

| Japan, South Korea hold talks amid "comfort women" feud |

 Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida held talks with his South Korean counterpart on Sunday in a bid to mend ties strained by a territorial dispute and a feud over "comfort women" forced to work in Japan's wartime military brothels. The fraught relations are complicating efforts to boost security cooperation between Japan and South Korea, two of the United States' main Asian allies, as the region copes with an unpredictable North Korea and an assertive China. South Korea says Japan has not properly atoned for its wartime past, including its role in forcing Korean women into prostitution at military brothels, while Japan says the matter of compensation for comfort women has already been settled.
