Blatter quits as FIFA chief after corruption scandal

Blatter, 79, announced the decision at a news conference in Zurich, six days after the FBI raided a hotel in Zurich and arrested several FIFA officials and just four days after he was re-elected to a fifth term as president. Blatter said an election to choose a new FIFA president would be held as soon as possible.




Google demands movie studios comply with subpoenas

In a request made public on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court, Google said Viacom Inc, Twenty-First Century Fox Inc and Comcast Corp's NBCUniversal "have produced nothing" in response to the March 12 subpoenas, and cannot claim the requested material is irrelevant or privileged.




Qatar Airways says still keen to sponsor FIFA World Cup

"With the World Cup coming to Qatar, we have had advanced internal discussions regarding this, but we are not in advanced discussions with FIFA," said a company spokesperson. Sotheby's withdraws sale of Russian painting alleged stolen

The international auction house Sotheby's withdrew from auction on Tuesday a painting by a famous Russian artist that Russia's Interior Ministry said last week had been stolen in 1997 from a private collection in Moscow. The auction house said "Evening in Cairo" by Ivan Aivazovsky had been withdrawn from the London sale at the request of the consignor, or seller. The Russian Interior Ministry, which had asked that British police block the auction, said in a statement on Tuesday the painting had been withdrawn "with the aim of resolving questions connected with compensation of the victim".


Surveillance reform bill clears U.S. Senate hurdle, amendments next

The Senate voted 83-14 to limit debate on the measure, known as the USA Freedom Act. Senate rules provide for up to 30 hours of debate before lawmakers vote on amendments, although Senate leaders said they expect those votes later on Tuesday.




Workers' deaths, FIFA scandal overshadow Scotland-Qatar match

The Qatar national soccer team's match against Scotland this Friday has raised hackles amongst Scottish politicians, unions and fans, adding to the controversy over the desert nation's hosting of the 2022 World Cup. Some want the friendly to be cancelled in protest against the deaths of migrant workers building stadiums for the World Cup. The Scottish Football Association - the world's second oldest - says the match will go ahead and that human rights issues should remain separate from sport.


Machete-waving man shot by police in Boston

BOSTON (Reuters) - A man waving a machete was shot by police in Boston on Tuesday and died of his injuries, police officials said. "Our officers tried their best to get him to put down the knife," Boston Police Commissioner William Evans told reporters at the scene. The man, whose identity was not immediately released, had been under surveillance by the U.S. Joint Terrorism Task force, local media reported. (Reporting by Scott Malone)

FIFA says Valcke not involved in $10 million payment

Secretary general Valcke had no role in the payments, which were authorised by the chairman of FIFA's Finance Committee, it said in a statement. "Neither the Secretary General Jerome Valcke nor any other member of FIFA's senior management were involved in the initiation, approval and implementation of the above project," FIFA said.




Acid producers responsible for "vile" attacks - NCW leader

Acid attacks - meant to maim, disfigure or blind - are most common in Cambodia, followed by Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India. Women are the victims of 80 percent of the roughly 1,500 acid attacks reported globally each year, the London-based charity Acid Survivors Trust International says.


Militants kill nine Afghan aid workers in night time attack

By Bashir Ansari MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Unidentified militants shot and killed nine Afghan employees of a Czech-backed aid group, People in Need, in an attack early on Tuesday in Afghanistan's northern Balkh province, government officials said. Aid workers have faced increasing attacks in Afghanistan as foreign troops have withdrawn and security has deteriorated, making the country one of the most dangerous for aid groups. Government officials blamed the Taliban for Tuesday's attack, about 50 miles (80 km) south of the provincial capital.
