China calls on police to use guns lawfully after shootings

Violent crime and shootings by police are relatively rare in China compared with some other countries but the police killing of a man during an altercation at a railway station in May provoked outrage on social media with many people complaining of police impunity. Chinese Vice Public Security Minister Huang Ming has urged police to use their guns lawfully to ensure both their safety and the security of the public.




Shooting reported at church in Charleston, South Carolina

A gunman opened fire on Wednesday evening at a historic African-American church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, and was still at large, a police official said, following a media report that as many as eight people may have been shot. Police described the suspect as a 21-year-old white man in a sweatshirt or hoodie and jeans, according to Charleston newspaper The Post and Courier. Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis said the shooting occurred at the Emanuel AME Church around 9 p.m. local time.

The debate on the contentious blueprint for how Hong Kong chooses its next leader in 2017 began on Wednesday, with pro-democracy legislators sticking to their guns and pledging to veto what they call a "fake" democratic model. Weeks of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong late last year posed the biggest challenge in years for China's ruling Communist Party.




South Korea parliament approves Park's pick for PM after scandal

South Korea's parliament approved President Park Geun-hye's choice for prime minister on Thursday after the incumbent stepped down following an allegation he accepted illegal campaign funds from a businessman. The post of prime minister is largely ceremonial in South Korea with the main responsibility being the head of the cabinet. Park's nominee is Justice Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, a career prosecutor whom Park's office said was the right person to clean up corruption and help bring about political reform.


New York man attacks FBI agent in Islamic State-tied probe - U.S

Fareed Mumuni, 21, was charged with attempting to murder a federal officer after authorities came to his residence in the borough of Staten Island, according to a complaint filed in federal court in Brooklyn.

Uber entered Mexico City in 2013, and says it has grown to around 300,000 users. In response, Mexico City's government is holding round-tables on how best to regulate apps like Uber and Cabify, which say they are private car services rather than taxis.

The case against Sergeant Lawrence Hutchins III touched off a furor in the United States and Iraq after it came to light. Hutchins was initially convicted of murder, larceny and making false statements over the killing of the civilian, a disabled former Iraqi police officer.

Blatter retained Richard Cullen, the chairman of the law firm McGuireWoods and a former U.S. federal prosecutor, said the person familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity. Swiss prosecutors looking into the international football scandal identified 53 suspicious bank transactions, the attorney general said on Wednesday, stressing that the investigation may take time.

Defence lawyer Barry Berke has been hired to represent Valcke, who is FIFA President Sepp Blatter's top lieutenant. Berke, a partner at Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel, most recently represented Michael Steinberg, a portfolio manager at Steven A. Cohen's SAC Capital Advisors hedge fund.
