"It has left a bad taste in their mouths," said James Jeffrey, a Houston-based international hunting agent with more than 12 years experience. Cecil, a rare black-maned lion, was lured out of Hwange National Park using bait and wounded with an arrow by Walter Palmer.

| Cincinnati police officer indicted in shooting death of black man | |  By Steve Bittenbender CINCINNATI (Reuters) - A University of Cincinnati police officer was indicted Wednesday on murder charges in the fatal shooting last week of an unarmed black motorist who was stopped because of a missing front license plate. Hamilton County prosecutor Joseph Deters called the July 19 death of Samuel Dubose, 43, "senseless" and "totally unwarranted." Ray Tensing, the 25-year-old white officer who shot Dubose in the head, "wasn't dealing with someone who was wanted for murder," Deters told a news conference. "He was dealing with someone who didn't have a front license plate.

| UK anti-Semitic incidents soar in first half of year - report | | | By Michael Holden LONDON (Reuters) - The number of recorded anti-Semitic incidents in Britain soared in the first six months of this year compared with 2014, probably due to a surge in reporting among fearful Jews, a report by a Jewish community body said on Thursday. There were 473 recorded incidents between January and June this year including two classified as "extreme violence", said the Community Security Trust (CST), which advises Britain's estimated 260,000 Jews on security. Across Europe, Jews have warned of a growing undercurrent of anti-Semitism, fuelled by anger at Israeli policy in the Middle East and social tensions over immigration and increasing economic hardship under austerity policies that have helped far-right movements gain popularity. |
| Congo opposition plans resistance to Sassou's third-term ambition | |  Republic of Congo opposition parties on Wednesday called on the population to resist attempts at constitutional reform that could pave the way for President Denis Sassou Nguesso to seek a third term in next year's presidential election. The country's opposition parties and some civil society groups convened an alternative meeting in the capital after boycotting a government-sponsored forum earlier this month which opened the possibility for Sassou Nguesso, 71, to seek another term. Sassou Nguesso, who has ruled oil-producing Congo for a total 31 years during two separate spells in office, is banned by the current Constitution from seeking another term.

| Maradona says he wants to fight FIFA 'mafia' | |  Argentine football great Diego Maradona said on Wednesday he wants to fight the "mafia" responsible for the corruption scandal that has rocked FIFA, but he stopped short of saying he wants to be the next president of global soccer's governing body. "I have to fight the mafia that still remains inside FIFA. Asked whether he would run for the FIFA presidency, the 54-year old replied ambiguously: "I really want to be in FIFA." In late May, federal prosecutors in New York indicted nine soccer officials, most of whom held or had held FIFA positions, and five sports media and promotions executives in schemes involving $150 million in bribes over a period of 24 years.

| Tennessee man arrested near U.S. Capitol complex - police | | | WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Capitol Police said on Wednesday that they arrested a Tennessee man who was driving near the Capitol complex with three firearms as well as ammunition in his vehicle. The man, identified as Steve Oney, had approached an officer and asked for directions on Tuesday on Independence Ave., which runs between the U.S. Capitol and the Rayburn House Office Building, according to an arrest record. | Merchants seek to void $6 billion Visa, MasterCard, AmEx settlements | |  By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dozens of retailers are seeking to void nearly $6 billion of U.S. antitrust settlements with Visa Inc , MasterCard Inc and American Express Co after learning that opposing lawyers exchanged confidential information, potentially tainting the accords. A group of retailers filed papers that remain under seal in the Brooklyn, New York federal court to scuttle their $5.7 billion accord with Visa and MasterCard, which won court approval in 2013, the retailers' lawyer Owen Glist said in an email. Similar papers were made public in the American Express case on Wednesday in the same court, where retailers opposing the $79 million accord include Wal-Mart Stores Inc , Target Corp and Home Depot Inc among others.

Eleven countries on the 15-member council voted in favour of the proposal by Malaysia, Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ukraine, while three countries abstained: China, Angola and Venezuela.

| Accused Russian spy loses bid to have U.S. charges dismissed | | | By Joseph Ax NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Russian citizen accused by U.S. authorities of posing as a banker in New York in order to spy for his government lost a bid to have the case against him dismissed on Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Richard Berman in Manhattan rejected Evgeny Buryakov's request to have the charges thrown out, saying the government's allegations were adequate to support the indictment. Buryakov and two other Russians were charged in February with conspiring to gather economic information on behalf of Russia's foreign intelligence service known as the SVR. |
| Minnesota dentist who killed Zimbabwe lion draws threats, protests | |  By David Bailey MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - Police in Minnesota are investigating reports of a threat against a dentist who killed Zimbabwe's most famous lion just outside a national wildlife preserve, sparking a global firestorm of hate messages on social media. Demonstrators were gathering on Wednesday afternoon outside the suburban Minneapolis office of Walter Palmer, 55, an avid big game hunter, who said in a statement he regrets killing the huge cat known as Cecil on July 1. As of Tuesday, Palmer had temporarily closed his office, River Bluff Dental, in Bloomington, Minnesota, amid wishes for his death and widespread criticism of his hunting on social media and under business reviews on Google and Yelp.

| South American body unveils anti-corruption reforms | | | South America's soccer confederation, CONMEBOL, announced a raft of reforms on Wednesday designed to root out corruption and clean up the organisation's image after the biggest graft scandal to hit the world's favourite sport. Former CONMEBOL presidents Nicolas Leoz and Eugenio Figueredo face U.S. extradition orders after they and other former or current officials of governing body FIFA and sports media and marketing executives were charged in New York in May with bribery and corruption. In a four-page document, CONMEBOL's Director General Gorka Villar said all commercial ties with bodies linked to criminal activities would be reviewed and that contracts would not be made with individuals facing legal charges, among other changes. |
