Punjab gunmen expose India's soft border ahead of Pakistan talks

Indian security personnel stand at the site of a gunfight in Dinanagar town, IndiaBy Andrew MacAskill and Frank Jack Daniel DINANAGAR, India/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Three men carrying assault rifles, bombs and a rocket launcher who went on a murderous rampage in a small Punjab farm town this week have shown how vulnerable India is to attacks that challenge tentative peace overtures with neighbour Pakistan. Monday's raid in an area that has long been tranquil came weeks after a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif. It fits a pattern of violent surges that make negotiating peace harder between nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan, who have fought three wars since independence in 1947.

1:06:29 PM

A view of the Indian Supreme Court building is seen in New DelhiBy Suchitra Mohanty and Aditya Kalra NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Yakub Memon's chances of avoiding the hangman's noose for his role in the 1993 Mumbai bombings dwindled on Wednesday, after Supreme Court threw out his final plea for mercy hours before he was due to be executed. Unless President Pranab Mukherjee intercedes, Memon will go to the gallows by 7 a.m. (0130 GMT) on Thursday, his 53rd birthday, for his role as the "driving spirit" in a series of bombings that killed at least 257 people. The case has aroused controversy because police considered Memon's brother, "Tiger" Memon, and mafia don Dawood Ibrahim to be the masterminds behind attacks designed to avenge the destruction of an ancient mosque by Hindu zealots in 1992.

The strikes hit Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) targets including shelters, depots and caves in six areas, a statement from Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu's office said. Iraq condemned the air strikes as a "dangerous escalation and an assault on Iraqi sovereignty", saying it was committed to ensuring militant attacks on Turkey were not carried out from within its territory.

Niger strips opposition parliamentary leader of immunity
11:03:32 AM
Niger's parliament on Tuesday stripped the head of the opposition MODEN party grouping of his immunity from prosecution, opening the way to his trial on charges of corruption, judicial sources said. A magistrate said Bakary Seidou was suspected of misappropriating 6.5 billion CFA francs ($10 million) in food aid using false documentation in 2005 when he worked in the office of then-prime minister Amadou Hama, now the leader of MODEN. "The office of the National Assembly lifted on Tuesday the parliamentary immunity of Bakary Seidou," said another magistrate, who asked not to be identified.

Bahrain sees "foreign" link in attack, Iran denies role
10:28:34 AM
Bahraini authorities have arrested several people in connection with Tuesday's deadly bombing and suspect the attack was a "foreign attempt" to harm the Gulf state's stability, local media reported on Wednesday. A published comment by Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman al Khalifa alleging a foreign role did not name any country, but Bahrain has frequently accused regional adversary Iran of trying to orchestrate bombings in the country. Tehran dismissed suggestions it had a role in the attack.
