Defendant and former Nazi SS officer Groening, dubbed the "bookkeeper of Auschwitz", sits in the courtroom ahead of his trial in the 'Ritterakademie' venue in LueneburgA former bookkeeper at Auschwitz who is accused of assisting in the mass murder of at least 300,000 people told a German court on Wednesday he could only ask God to forgive him as he was not entitled to ask this of victims of the Holocaust. Oskar Groening, 94, did not kill anyone himself while working as a clerk at the notorious Nazi death camp but prosecutors say his role made him a part of the machinery that allowed the systematic killing to take place. "I can only ask my Lord God for forgiveness," Groening said in a statement read out by one of his lawyers at what is likely to be one of the last big Holocaust trials in Germany.

Facing mounting public pressure, leaders in Beijing have declared a war on pollution, vowing to abandon a decades-old growth-at-all-costs economic model that has spoiled much of China's water, skies and soil. Beijing has repeatedly promised to strengthen monitoring and law enforcement, and a new environmental law in force since Jan. 1 gives it the clout to impose unlimited fines and jail sentences on repeat offenders.

Rajapaksa launches comeback bid in Sri Lanka poll for PM
12:08:45 PM

Former Sri Lankan president Rajapaksa speaks to his supporters at his residence in MedamulanaBy Shihar Aneez MEDAMULANA, Sri Lanka (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, regarded as a hero by some and a war criminal by others for the brutal defeat of Tamil Tiger rebels six years ago, announced on Wednesday that he would stand in an election for prime minister next month. The parliamentary election comes after months of deadlock in the legislature, as a six-month-old coalition government cobbled together by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickramassinghe has struggled to pass key political reforms in the island state. Together they had sought to curb presidential powers which they had accused Rajapaksa of abusing during his decade in power, and depoliticise state institutions such as the police, judiciary and public services.
