The lower house of parliament is threatening to impeach Ghani's interior minister over his failure to stem violence by Islamist militants. Last week lawmakers rejected the president's third nominee for defence minister.




Chinese police visits regulator, to probe "malicious" short-selling

The country's stock markets have plunged roughly 30 percent over the last three weeks, with a series of increasingly aggressive attempts by authorities so far having failed to stem the massive exodus from a once-booming market. Citing unidentified sources, Xinhua said Vice Minister of Public Security Meng Qifeng had led a team to the office of the China Securities Regulatory Commission on Thursday morning.

Francis, Latin America's first pope, made back-to-back addresses in the thin air of La Paz, which sits in a bowl surrounded by mountain peaks, and showed no sign of suffering from altitude sickness.




Guinea ex-junta leader indicted over stadium massacre

Camara's indictment could throw into doubt his participation in elections set for Oct. 11 at which he is set to run for the newly created Patriotic Forces for Democracy and Development (FPDD) party against President Alpha Conde. Camara ruled the West African country for almost a year after seizing power in a coup in 2008 and remains popular in his native Forest region of southeastern Guinea.

Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee, filed court papers in Pennsylvania district court, also accusing Cosby and his advisers of manipulating the media through interviews and statements about the slew of sex assault allegations against him. The lawsuit was filed two days after a Pennsylvania judge unsealed testimony in Constand's 2005 civil lawsuit against Cosby, in which the actor said he had obtained Quaaludes with the intent of giving the sedatives to young women in order to have sex with them.




AC/DC's Rudd gets home detention for threatening to kill

Phil Rudd, the Australian-born drummer from world-famous rock band AC/DC, was sentenced to eight months home detention in a New Zealand court on Thursday after pleading guilty to charges of threatening to kill and possession of drugs.
