 The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a final appeal for mercy by Yakub Memon, the only person to be sentenced to death for a series of bombings in Mumbai in 1993, a day before he was due to be executed. The fate of another plea for mercy submitted to President Pranab Mukherjee was not immediately clear. Memon was convicted as the "driving spirit" behind the blasts that killed at least 257 people at separate landmarks in the financial capital, including the Bombay Stock Exchange, a popular cinema and two crowded markets.

| Niger's parliament on Tuesday stripped the head of the opposition MODEN party grouping of his immunity from prosecution, opening the way to his trial on charges of corruption, judicial sources said. A magistrate said Bakary Seidou was suspected of misappropriating 6.5 billion CFA francs ($10 million) in food aid using false documentation in 2005 when he worked in the office of then-prime minister Amadou Hama, now the leader of MODEN. "The office of the National Assembly lifted on Tuesday the parliamentary immunity of Bakary Seidou," said another magistrate, who asked not to be identified. |

| Bahraini authorities have arrested several people in connection with Tuesday's deadly bombing and suspect the attack was a "foreign attempt" to harm the Gulf state's stability, local media reported on Wednesday. A published comment by Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman al Khalifa alleging a foreign role did not name any country, but Bahrain has frequently accused regional adversary Iran of trying to orchestrate bombings in the country. Tehran dismissed suggestions it had a role in the attack. |

The strikes hit six Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) targets including shelters, depots and caves, a statement from Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu's office said. Turkey launched near-simultaneous strikes against PKK camps in Iraq and Islamic State fighters in Syria last Friday, in what Davutoglu has called a "synchronised fight against terror".

Washington and Ankara this week announced their intention to provide air cover for Syrian rebels and jointly sweep Islamic State fighters from a strip of land along the border, with U.S. warplanes using bases in Turkey for strikes.
