10:57:14 AM
A Palestinian man was shot dead on Monday by Israeli police troopers after he stabbed and lightly wounded one of them at a military checkpoint in the occupied West Bank, a police spokeswoman said. The incident came two days after a Palestinian was shot and killed and another was wounded during what Israeli authorities said were two knife attacks on troops in the West Bank. With U.S.-sponsored peace negotiations stalled since April 2014, violence has simmered in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, among territories where Palestinians seek statehood.

The president removed Shwe Mann and his allies from the leadership of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) last week in a dramatic shake-up of the country's political establishment three months before the first free general election in 25 years. Suu Kyi, who leads the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) that is expected to win the vote in November, and Shwe Mann met for an hour, a ruling party parliamentarian said on condition of anonymity.

Egypt's Sisi approves anti-terrorism law creating special courts
10:13:07 AM

Worker of Egypt's Ministry of Finance Tax Authority holds a poster of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during a protest in front of the Syndicate of Journalists in CairoEgyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi approved an anti-terrorism law that sets up special courts and protects its enforcers in the face of a two-year-long Islamist insurgency that aims to topple his government. The law has come under fire from human rights groups who accuse Sisi, who as military chief deposed a freely elected Islamist president in 2013, of rolling back freedoms won in the 2011 uprising that toppled veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Sisi had promised a tougher legal system in July after a car bomb attack in Cairo that killed the chief public prosecutor, the highest ranking state official to be killed in years.

10:12:03 AM

Ousted former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra sits in a van as she leaves the Supreme court in BangkokBy Amy Sawitta Lefevre BANGKOK (Reuters) - Ousted former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra raised questions on Monday about a constitution drafted by military rulers, adding her voice to a chorus of concern over provisions in the charter that critics say is undemocratic. A junta-appointed National Reform Council (NRC) is due to vote in September on whether to accept or reject the draft constitution, with a rejection meaning more work and a delay in an election the military has promised for late 2016. The draft is due to be presented to the NRC on Saturday though parts of it have been published.

Tsipras likely to call confidence vote after party revolt
10:10:21 AM

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras talks with Energy Minister Panos Skourletis during a parliamentary session in Athens, GreeceBy George Georgiopoulos and David Stamp ATHENS (Reuters) - The Greek government appears likely to call a confidence vote, following a rebellion among lawmakers from the ruling Syriza party over the country's new bailout deal, senior ministers said on Monday. Energy Minister Panos Skourletis described such a parliamentary vote as "self-evident" following Friday's rebellion when almost a third of Syriza deputies abstained or voted against the agreement. With Syriza's left wing showing little sign of returning to the party fold, Skourletis also raised the possibility of early elections should Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras lose a confidence motion.

South African Olympic and Paralympic sprinter Pistorius is led to a prison van after his sentencing in PretoriaBy Joe Brock PRETORIA (Reuters) - In one of the wealthiest suburbs of South Africa's capital Pretoria stands a three-storey mansion where Paralympic gold medallist Oscar Pistorius will be taken on his release from prison this week. Pistorius, 29, is expected to wear an electronic tracking tag when he is released on Friday after serving 10 months of a five-year sentence for killing his model and law graduate girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. The release of Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated when he was a baby, is in line with South African sentencing guidelines that say non-dangerous prisoners should spend only one-sixth of a custodial sentence behind bars.

Iraqi parliament refers Mosul report to prosecutor, Abadi
8:57:53 AM

Iraqis carry a portrait of PM al-Maliki as they march in support of him in BaghdadBy Saif Hameed BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's parliament on Monday referred to the judiciary a report calling for the trial of former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and dozens of other top officials in connection with the fall of Mosul to Islamic State last year, two lawmakers said. Lawmaker Mohamed al-Karbouli said the vote in parliament was taken by a show of hands and passed by a majority. The panel's report, the most drastic step yet taken by Baghdad to provide accountability for the loss of nearly a third of the country's territory to the Islamist insurgency, alleges that Maliki had an inaccurate picture of the threat to the northern city because he chose commanders who engaged in corruption and failed to hold them accountable.
