U.S. military cancels hearing for Sept. 11 suspects

"The judge cited issues that remain unresolved with regard to a claimed defense counsel conflict of interest," said Commander Gary Ross. Defense attorneys for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four alleged co-conspirators raised concerns in 2014 that they were being spied on by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In a separate initiative, military commanders accused of abandoning their posts in Ramadi, the capital of the western Anbar province which was overrun by Islamic State militants in May, could face court martial. The moves come a week after Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi launched a sweeping campaign to reform the country's governing system, and are the most drastic steps yet taken by Baghdad to provide accountability for the loss of nearly a third of the country's territory to the Islamist insurgency.




Suspected al Shabaab fighters warn Kenyan villagers to shun police

The al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab has made a series of deadly raids in Kenya since Kenyan troops first entered Somalia to fight them in 2011. It has said it will continue until Nairobi withdraws the troops, now part of an African Union peacekeeping force. Residents of Basuba village in the coastal region of Lamu said the militants, numbering over 50, warned them against boarding any police or military vehicles because they targeted them for attacks.


Blast kills Pakistani provincial minister in PM's political heartland

Police said the blast appeared to be a suicide attack, launched as Punjab home minister Shuja Khanzada held a meeting in his hometown of Attock in the country's north. "There were between 20 and 30 people present when the blast took place," district information officer Shahzad Niaz told Reuters.




Myanmar ruling party leaders to meet Monday before parliamentary showdown

Rivalry between two of Myanmar's most powerful establishment figures - party chairman Shwe Mann and President Thein Sein - came to a head in a late-night drama on Wednesday, when trucks with security personnel sealed off the headquarters of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP). The president sacked Shwe Mann and purged his allies from the USDP leadership, just three months before the country's first free election in 25 years.

Less than a year into her tumultuous second term, the left-wing president's support has dwindled to single digits in recent polls, while two in three support calls for her impeachment. Sunday's protests were the third major demonstration of the year against Rousseff.
